I'm currently researching for a project and looking for the thoughts of owners and fans on a couple of questions. 1) what are the key elements that make a good Ferrari? 2) what turns a good Ferrari it into a great Ferrari Thanks
wow, those answers are going to be highly subjective IMO to me, a great Ferrari is one that is actually good looking, more than just striking design, many are striking, few are really beautiful having a more direct racing experience is nice (meaning that model is/has been raced), but the beauty can trump that even, i.e. 288 GTO what's the project?
Hey Sy, here are a few that I would suggest: -proper and regular maintnenance, both mechanically and cosmetically -driving as much as possible (as opposed to garage-queening it) -good photos -sharing the experience with those that are not fortunate enough to own one themselves -the model has to be a 348 to be great (okay this last point was in jest, I couldn't help myself )
Beauty Power Speed Sounds fantastic Fun to drive Responsive handling (the oneness of man and machine) Exclusivity (not everybody has one)

Feel Response Sound Looks Speed Not necessarily in that order. But all of them together IS a Ferrari.
No problem. I just have yet to find a front engine car that handles like a mid engine car. I prefer the handling and sound of the engine behind your head. the Testarossa, F50 and Enzo fill that bill.
12 cylinders and a outstanding body. Hence the reason to own a Testarossa. Add dual mirrors and you have a car for the gods!!!!!! Single mirror owners will never know what they are missing!!
Thanks everyone. Some great comments and food for thought. Keep them coming!!! We start filming a documentary on the 348 next month and I'm in the process of drafting the script. This thread has given me a few more ideas to ponder.
In your opinion Sy, is the 348 good or great. Does it exude the passion a truly great Ferrari should. Just asking.
To have a great Ferrari, you have to have an owner with passion. All (non-wrecked) Ferraris are good Ferraris, great Ferraris have great owners. Mark
Does the car push all the owner's buttons in a positive way? Does the owner sometimes dream / wistfully think about driving the car? Is the emotional connection toward the car akin to "love?"
Amazingly, you have that exactly backwards. The F40 is an abomination: Ugly, uncomfortable, uncivilized, and it has a V8 with turbos. I hate turbos! The most disappointing Ferrari EVER. I almost cried the first time I saw one (Dallas, circa 1996). Try to convince me that ridiculous design has aged well. You can't because it hasn't. That rear wing is laughable. Then the F50 came out, and all was right with the world again: Beautiful, comfortable, civilized, and it had a Ferrari-proper naturally aspirated V12. The best modern Ferrari yet. Still! I don't get you F40 Kool-Aid drinkers at all. That car is a genuine POS. I don't care how fast it can get around a track. You could give me one, and I'd sell it immediately and buy an F50. Hate the F40. Hate it more than any other Ferrari in all of Ferrari history. But the GREATEST Ferraris all have two things in common: They have a V12 up front, and they are red. Like this. Without disparaging the F50, the F40 is the greatest Ferrari over the last 40 years bar none IMHO... It is THE Ferrari....Everything about it is just sublime... My limited personal experience aside, I have yet to meet an owner, speak to a mechanic, or read a review of this car that has done anything to dispel my belief that the F40 may just be one of the greatest sports cars of all time.
I have to agree with this statement. In short....it is everything a Ferrari should be and more. It is without a doubt one of the greatest sports cars and imho...the BEST Ferrari bar none. Nothing compares to it. Now.....can we find one in my price range???
~sigh~ Keep drinking that Kool-Aid boys. I'll stick to fine ales. (Kids these days. No appreciation for tradition at all). F40 fans can kiss my cheeks. lol. Cheers, George
I would say that a couple of runs at Sebring, a 3rd place finish in the Targa Florio, a good showing at the 'Ring, topped off with a 1st overall finish at Le Mans might do the trick. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
With all due respect George, Tradition to me would be a 1957 Testa Rossa 250R. Love the pontoon fenders......AND......the V-12. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Guys sometimes I wonder if we drink too much kool aid. Here's the deal There are cars that are prettier than Ferrari's There are cars that handle better than Ferrari's There are cars that have better quality control than Ferrari's There are cars that have better gearboxes than Ferrari's There are cars that go faster than Ferrari's There are cars that handle better than Ferrari's There are cars that are a much better bang for the buck than Ferrari's But no other car has a Ferrari engine. It's the big difference that makes them special and the one thing others CANNOT say.
