since there seems to be a good deal of Ducati knowledge in this section, i figured this was as good a place as any to ask. i was on a group ride yesterday with some older guys, and one of them had a bright red Ducati, but for the life of me i cant figure out what it was. heres what i know:

-he said it was limited edition, only sold online, only 2000 made.
-bought for $15,000, didnt say used or new.
-circlular headlight, circlular taillight. no turn signals anywhere that i remember. headlight reminded me of what most cruisers have.
-had termiogini or whatever it is exhaust, it was a full titanium undertail system ($$$$$$$)
    -sounded like a vtwin sorta
-seating position was like a sportbike, but the side fairings were more like a dualsport, like an FZR or SV
    -very fast
-i know what the more popular duc's look like and it wasnt any of them (748, 916, 996, 999, monster)
-TONS of carbon fibre (wheels, mirrors, tank may have been, some of the stuff around the gauges)

anyone know what this could be? i think a friend of his called it like an m2h maybe? but i cant find any record of that being a ducati model. and not that it matters, but he has a 999 scheduled for delivery this week. said he was taking it down to a track in GA to test it out next weekend

The bike you describe has never been made by Ducati, although it is probably a modified version of the MH900e. CF wheels have never been stock on any model.

The MH900e stood for Mike Hailwood 900 Evoluzione. Hailwood was a multitime world champion that put in one of his greatest rides ever to win at the Isle of Man in 1978, after being off bikes for a decade. He rode an NCR Ducati 900SS, from 1979 to 1985 Ducati marketed a Mike Hailwood Replica (MHR for short).

This bike was a marketing gimmick to test the waters of selling limited editions online. It was sold online for the 2000 and 2001 model years. Later, special versions of the 998 and 999 have also been sold online, among others.

BTW, Hailwood's widow sued Ducati for using her husband's name (well, initials really, but everyone knew what they were trying to say). I'm not sure what the resolution of the lawsuit was. Hailwood died in an auto accident in 1981.

sweet, thats it. knew i could count on the Fchat guys :). i suppose the CF wheels make sense if he shelled out $1500+ for just an exhaust and $20,000+ for a track use only 999

Mrs. Hailwood should have sued Terblanche PERSONALLY for that.

Yup, that sounds like the MH900E alright, but probably modded. It's by far my favorite bike ever. Well, maybe 2nd behind the Confederate Wraith, but still way way up there. Granted I believe Ducati has since released (or at least has in the pipeline) 3 other retro styled, limited edition bikes out there: Smart1000LE (very similarly styled to the MH900E), Sport 1000, & the GT1000. At least I know there will be quite a few nice choices out there when I'm ready to buy a nice bike.

All 3 of those are nice, Terblanche must have been out sick the day they designed them.

Cliff's notes version: Reclothed 900SS with a cool swingarm and tortuous ergonomics.

I can't believe I'm defending the guy, but he did do the 851/888 restyle for 1992, as well as the Supermono. Granted, this was all done while Tamburini was still there as well.

He has had some hits (888, supermono, Monster S4R). He has also had some misses (Cagiva Gran Canyon, Multistrada, current ST3/4s, MH900e). They can't all be homeruns I guess.

I like the '91-97 900SS, but also find the new generation of Supersports to be dead sexy as well. I would have liked to have seen an evolution of the 916/996 be the replacement to the supersport line, even if it used the 1000DS air cooled engine. Maybe it will happen someday who knows.

FWIW, Terblanche was given the near impossible task of designing the replacement for the 916. I doubt even Tamburini could have offered a replacement that would have been as loved as the original 916. You could argue that the MV F4 is of course Tamburini's answer, and it is also gorgeous. Now eight years after breaking cover, he has not produced another design to replace the F4. Instead MV has increased capacity and offered limited edition paint schemes, but the bike retains its same basic look. Must not be all that easy, even for the master.

It's not really fast, if that's what you're wondering. It's more about looks.

The Monster S4R is fug ugly!!!, rather the M1000 any day.

Oh and I think the current Supersports are a hit myself!

The S4R is ugly but the current SS is a hit?

    Yikes...

Different strokes for different folks I guess. At least you and I will never get in a bidding war over the same bike! :)

Damn, it may be just me... but I think the S4R is dead sexy... But I like nekkid bikes with all the ugly bits showing.

But hey, I think Buells look good too... so there MUST be something wrong with me.

The MH is indeed more show than go. its a funky little bike, not a real road burner, and not a great handler. Good for some sporty riding, but not a track bike by ANY means. Good looks though. Lots of style.

The S4R is rumored to be getting the 999 engine for 2006. Besides a jump in power and servicability, some of the external oil and water lines will also be eliminated. If it happens the water-cooled monster will look cleaner.

The 999 is also rumored to be getting a 100cc jump in displacement to make it more competitive on spec sheets with the latest Japanese literbikes. A 1100-1200cc testaretta engine in the ST4s or Monster S4R would be incredible.

And guys the current SS is styled on the supermono so unless you really think the supermono is ugly and only get off on it 'cause it is rare then you have to like the looks of the SS (loose the light with race skins and identical looking).

What I do not like about the S4R is:
    1. The radiator is fncken enormous and dominates the look. Air cooled monsters look heaps better.
    2. That SSS is weird. Prefer the 998 style one.
    3. The exhaust is gay in standard form and most surely throw it in the bin on the way home from the dealership ;)
    4. And what is with the gay stripe ... what are they doing, making a bike for the Village People?

Give me a nice red M1000 anyday ... nice and pure :)
    Pete's opinion

I want one of those in a big way.... not sure the wife would appreciate another Ducati in the mix though.

    *******

I do have to agree with some of the comments about the S4R I suppose. The reason I was considering an S2R was the lack of the radiator. The swingarm and stripes don't bother me, the exhaust I could live with until I sprung for an aftermarket set, but I changed the exhaust on my SS and will soon change it on my 996 too, so that's not a big negative to me.

As for the Supermono-Super Sport similarites, I don't think they do look identical. In fact it may be I don't like the SS because I like the Supermono so much. The SS is enough different it doesn't look right to me... maybe it's the lights, maybe it's the dual seat, whatever. It just doesn't look as good to me as the previous SS design - which is admitedly dated, but so what. (My latest Ducati project is a 1974 750 GT, BTW...)

All that said, I had the same criticism of the Mosnter S4's radiator. Then I rented one for the Motogiro last year and loved riding it. So now I'm a little more forgiving of it's styling flaws. :)
