what I seem to feel is that some people just want to pull a Ferrari owner's chain: I usually join in with an appropriate sense of humor and they calm down, get off their fishing trip and we have a good conversation.

People who have never heard of a Ferrari and claim it to be a fancy mustang are not even in the child category...lots of children yell "FERRARI" ..... that I have seen, EVEN when the 456 goes by [and MANY don't understand that to be their personification of a Ferrari, including my Sister who likes the Mondial more].

So, if you can, try to show them what nice people we can be [not saying any of us are NOT..ok] just bring them over to the light...

i guess people are intelligent about the things they are interested in.
Tell her it came with a Prada bag accessory for the significant other and she would reply:
"Oh, the limited edition shaded calf buck red leather satchel with a mordoré finish and palladium-plated hardware?"

My sister in law (wife's brother's wife) has lived her entire life in the outlying suburbs of Cleveland. She and her husband took a trip to Miami earlier this year, her first time there. Talking to her after their trip, part of the conversation went something like this:

Her: And all of these cars down there -- they look like SHUTTLES!!! And all of the women walking around are all MODELS!!!

Me: Shuttles? (I'm picturing blue vans that take you to the airport)

    Her: Yes!! Like SHUTTLES!!

    Me: <confused look>

Her: You know, the SPACE SHUTTLE!! And they have all these SHIELDS ON THEM! Like SHIELDS, like you know, like --

Me: <very confused look> You mean the cars look like spaceships?

Her: Yeah, they're all low and look like spaceships! And they're full of shields, like you see on --

Me: <onfused look, still> Big shields? Little shields? Did individual cars each have a lot of shields?

Her: No, maybe one or two, a few. Not big.

Me: You mean like the badge on the nose? Were they all the same, or were they different?

Her: They were all different, on the side, too.

. . . at first I was thinking WTF?! Then I was thinking she saw various exotic cars and saw the different badges, many of which are coat of arms-shaped. It wasn't until later that day that I realized she may have seen fender badges on newer Ferraris.

The SADDEST part of all was that . . . I know my cars are older and in Miami you see mostly new models, but she had seen my Lotus Esprit numerous times, and MY FERRARI 308 WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY!

To this day, my wife and I make "shuttle" jokes to each other. :)

Well .... my story is completely backwards ...

As my 4 year old daughter keeps calling FERRARI every Mustang we see; Just because I told her about the little horsey ....;)

even those pink Mustang driven by BARBIE are FERRARIS to her ....

I always take the high road to start off with.

At first when people would say "Is that i Mustang?" I too thought they were just joking or trying to get a reaction so i'd say with a laugh "yeah, one of the new ones (mustang)" then look at their face and see confusion as to why i answered that way then they'd say "what? is that a Mustang?" real serious like i'm playing a joke on 'em or something and they wanted the joke to end now. It is odd too since so many young boys know exactly what it is. The coffee can import tuner guys chuck the duece and the surfers flip the finger snap my way. A group of 'brothers' pulled up to me one day in the parking lot rollin in on 24's with bling all over 'em and came over and said how nice it was and got back in the Escalade after giving me the fist bump. I often see men notice the car from their car and the mouth just opens wide followed by pointing and a big smile.

Mostly get thumbs up and nice car comments and i love Ferrari etc. from people but it's the Rednecks that don't get it or get mad at you when they realize what it is.

Like i said The South is different than other areas.

So VERY true on the redneck thing: Went to my 1st NASCAR event last month here at Infineon, as it's only 5 miles from me, and got TWO crappy 'hey, Magnum..' comments.

Last year during the DOdge days, when driving by, some Dodge guy give me the finger as I'm making my way towards Marin county: whatever.

Two biggest problems I've come across [who I consider redneckers] were truck drivers: Both tossed [at different times] drinks from their trucks at me, while we were driving the opposite directions......

Interesting..I always notice how much cleaner and nicer the good ole boys in Cali are. Texas, Oklahoma, North Carolina, etc. don't have the same degree of Redneck as we have in North Florida IMO. I end up liking the country folk from other areas but can't stand the ones 'round here.

It's like in other places the so called Rednecks are just simple folk and the real Rednecks are starring on the next episode of the tv show COPS. I feel like we have all the stars of COPS over here.

Oddly enough the only place i've lived with these types is in Annapolis MD. I went to a public school mixed with Preppy sailing types and Jocks and Burnouts and of course the Rednecks ( real nasty ones). Funny thing was i remember thinking that the world was a smarter, kinder, and nicer place since i hadn't seen the kind of 'necks i used to know when in Annapolis. I'd began to think they just didn't exist anymore. My theory was blown soon as i started mingling in North Florida though..wow!

Before this thread becomes a redneck bashing thread lets slow these lil pony's down a little. I can't believe people confuse a Ferrari for a Ford, but then again I've grown up as a car guy. As far as Redneck's/Hillbilly's go, there is nothing wrong with rednecks or hillbilly's what you are referring to is Trash. Trashy people are out there, they don't come from just the stick's/trailer park/ghetto, but they also come from the rich section's of town. Trash doesn't have a social class sadly they are dispersed from low income all the way up to the super wealthy. There has been plenty of times I've had trouble out of spoiled rich punks, but I've also had trouble out of the government owned children. It's just a lack of respect for other peoples property.

Sorry for the rant, I just wanted to get my message across.

Just to be clear the term "redneck" came from a working person who worked all day in the sun with his work
shirt on, thus the term "redneck". Originally the word was never meant to have a bad connotation (sp?) but gradually morphed into one.

I find the common man laborer who works with his hands to be a far finer friend and neighbor then the briefcase carrying over educated
yuppie *******s I meet in my work.

    IMHO

I am pretty much a redneck and grew up in a white trash-influenced lower-middle class upbringing. I can walk among that kind, as I am one underneath, and be perfectly comfortable. I don't look like it, or normally talk like it, but I am from it. Were you to call me a redneck I'd agree with you.

However, I'd rather not stay physically in that culture nor hold proud to my chest a level of ignorance about the world. You can be a redneck and run the world. That's been proven over and over again.

That's why i said there are good ole boys and Rednecks and made differentation between the two. Good ole boys= nice simple honest country people who'd give you the shirt off their back and Redneck= dirtbags on the show COPS.

I've got a cousin who fixes up old muscle cars and lives in trailer. Often the projects are scattered around the land he lives on but i don't consider him a Redneck. He's pretty much lived the Jeff Foxworthy joke of If you mow your lawn and find a car you might be a Redneck. Got another set of cousins (brothers) that own and work a farm and i don't consider them Rednecks either.

Sadly, this happened to me several times!

One sort of funny story, I am at the gas station during Memorial Day weekend in DC = 10 million motor bikes for the veterans rally. This guy pulls up and his wife gets off the back. He says, " WOW! Is that a new Mustang?", wife quickly kicks him in the ass and says, "Thats a Ferrari you idiot!!!!". I tried not laugh for fear he would bend me like a pretzel!!!!!

I had to call AAA to get our 355 towed from the side of the road on rt 495. The guy who answered asked me what kind of car I had. When I told him "Ferrari", he asked "What make is that?" I again told him "Ferrari". I then asked him if he had ever even heard of Ferrari before and he replied "No!" Frustrated, broken down on the side of the road on a Sunday, outta state, I told him he had to call a flat bed tow truck since the car sits so low. Again he was clueless. I then asked for his supervisor and SHE understand our situation and sent an exotic car specialist flat bed tow truck.

Similar here is Australia .... but mistaken for a Corvette

Years ago, my middle aged female neighbour from across the road lodged a noise complaint against me with the the equivalent of the local EPA - claiming that I " worked on my Corvettes and revved the engines through all hours of the night" keeping her awake. (This wasn't true anyway)

Anyway, when the inspector turned up to talk to me about "my corvette's and the noise" he was surprised to see a couple of Ferrari's in the garage - he turned out to be a car guy who was in to MG's and who was knowledgable about Ferrari's , and we had a nice chat about cars in general.
And as far as he was concerned, there were no Corvette's at my place, so we couldn't have been the source of any noise. Case closed.

    PS
Mustangs & Corvettes were not sold new in Australia, so they are considered "exotic" here.

Coming out of a restaurant my 360 was confused for a Corvette by a 50 something year old man and in his group was a woman in her 80s, she was the one who told them that it was a Ferrari. She looked like a very classy lady and it didn't take her but a second to know it was a Ferrari.
