Lockheed Martin is putting new engines on C-5s in Marietta. This was probably one of them out on a test flight.

Just curious - how the heck did you suspect he flew "about 6,254" feet? I mean,
that's pretty damn EXACT!!! That's out of the range of "about" in my mind.

Struts. By definition and function. The Egyptians built pylons, things that stood upright and static. Elements that react thrust along their longitudinal axis are struts.

As an aside, DO NOT go pointing a laser range finder at a plane. Especially a military aircraft. Unless you want a visit from your local Federales...

Do they do all four at the same time or just two or something like that in case of a problem?

I've done extensive analysis of the pics...

That is NOT 6,254 feet... it is EXACTLY 6,253.6 feet.

Go ahead, prove me wrong. :) :) ;)

Yep and you can stuff three of my CH-46's inside of it! That plane is HUGE.

C-17.......C-5's don't have winglets. In a few of the shots you can see the wings from the bottom and they angle off.....that angle is the sweep of the winglet...C-5 has a normal looking wing tip...

    My 2 Cents

However it seems awfully big for a C -17 and the bottom right shot does look like a C-5 front end......

Actually, they're experimenting with winglets on C-5s, and if this aircraft is so equipped, they may have been testing that more than the new engines. Winglets may eventually appear on C-130s as well.

I'm not as close to what is going on with Lockheed like Jim is but everybody seems to be messing with winglets and I agree that the C-5 could use them. Those photos are the C-5 because of the finess ratio of the fuselage. The C-17 is stubbier.

Considering how quickly the AMP has been progressing I suspect that antigravity belts to fly us from point A to B will be perfected before winglets on the C-130.

I think you are right. Another way to identify it as a C5 is the extension of the top rear of the T-tail. It sticks out too far for a C17.

Tell that to the engineers at Lockheed, they call them pylons. But then they also call them ships instead of planes... I have yet to figure out the genesis of this.

It's an optical illusion due to the shape of the wingtip and the resolution of the photo. There are no winglets on that plane or any other C-5M on this flight line . To answer the other fellow, they remove the old pylons and replace them all with new ones to fit the new engines, same as on Air Force one but these are de-rated for longevity.

It is unbelievable how much more quiet these are compared to the originals, and one aircrew remarked that it was like getting a fifth engine in regards to power. All that and a nice glass cockpit.
