I own a 348 and I love the look. I also like the tr's. So would love to hear some opinions from other f chatters. Looks wise, 348 or tr? Both are pretty similar performance wise.
The 348 is beautiful, but the testarossa is probably one of the most beautiful cars on the planet. I'm not biased though
They are similar in performance ? I didn't know the 348 could do 180 mph ? Comparing any 8 cyl Ferrari with the flag ship 12 cyl Ferrari is a not appropriate. As great as the 348 is, the Testarossa is by far the one that made an automotive impact...that single mirror in 84 with that single bolt rim was very striking , and still is. Beauty is in the eye on the beholder, that's why we should all own both
Arguments could be made for both species but in my eyes the 348 is just a bit compact, and therefore not as elegant as the Testarossa. So if elegance is a virtue ~ TR it is.
I never said the same, similar. Zero to sixty within fractions of a second, 1/4 mile is about a sec off and yes the tr has a higher top speed. And this is just a general poll. Just for fun. I look at the tr and wonder if I should get one but then I look at my 348 and go for a drive and think I am happy with what I have.
In my mind a 348 with a body colored bottom instead of a black bottom. The 1992-1994 512TR looks a lot nicer to me than a 1984-1991. I never understood the one mirror thing. Seems dangerous to me and looks uneven. My $0.02.
They are such different cars. The 348 is more fun on back roads and more livable day to day. The testarossa is an absolute beast in every sense of the word and just oozes with attitude. Whereas the 348 is toss able the tr is determined. As for speed, forget what the stats say, in the real world I have encountered few cars that can keep up with a tr at high speeds. The torque is immediate and accessible at any RPM and it is geared for business on the open road. I have yet to put my finger on exactly how she does it, but I have friends with other exotics who have commented that I passed them like they were standing still. Still, as you said, this is a fun poll not a pissing contest. Definitely drive a TR before considering making the switch. If you love your 348, you may find you hate the TR. cylinder count isn't everything!
I wouldn't consider it till we get back to California this year. But I was planning on driving one as soon as that happens.
I'm on the verge of buying a 91 tr. They are indeed an iconic car. I just hope we can reach an agreement on price. 348, looks a little more dated IMHO.
I like them both. Had a 348SS and loved it, but I really am digging Testarossa's right now. I think they are just so wide and low that they have a presence many other cars only dream of having.
Had a 348, and I have driven a Testarossa. Testarossa Wins hands down in looks and power.. In a straight line.
Also liked the Testarossa and wanted one. But as I got older they are just a bit to big for my liking. Its a monster care. Huge. So I went from that to the 348. Its better for me. But wasnt the Testarossa the fastest car in the world at one stage?
I remember when the knuckleheads on rennlist were saying the 928 will beat a TR any year for year car. Yeah BS. 4 extra cylinders bye bye.. TR wins..
The '94 512 TR would be my pick from the side strakes-and-shoulder pads era. The larger, restyled wheels were a major upgrade, and the body-colored lower valance gives it a chunkier stance. Black is the best color -- hides some of the awkward lines and accentuates its lowness and width, which are very dramatic. I like the proportions of the 348, but with the 355 being essentially a cleaned-up version of the same body I'd probably go that path (ignoring the mechanical weak spots of either model, for sake of discussion). Personally, I'd look into a Boxer/308/328 -- I think they've aged better and aren't that much more expensive in the grand scheme of things.
I'm definitely not arguing that the Testarossa is not a big car compared to a 348. Amusingly, however, aside from being a tad wider, the Testarossa is really no larger than a 360 or 458. Alot of the design language on the TR, especially the rear grill was designed specifically to give it the appearance of massive width....Mission accomplished To your other question, the Testarossa did hold the mantel at its launch of being the fastest production car in the world.
I always liked the TRs but they do seem huge and long front end hanging out there. I would love to own one but when it came down to it I went for the 348 TS. No regrets.
I don't know how that's possible given the 288gto was introduced the same year and had a top speed 2mph higher. But maybe they don't consider the 288gto a production car (even thought the whole purpose was to qualify it as a production car)?
