If I could describe a person with 'class'. if anyone saw the movie 'Pretty Women' the character played by Richard Gere is 'classy', Pierce Bronson in the Thomas Crown Affair.. his character is to me a classy guy, there are countless others, in women Halley Berry, Sigorney Weaver, Michelle Phifer, and some others... I'm sure others can chime in...

I thought Gere was a bit of a dxxche in Pretty Woman...at least at first. He eventually grew into a classy person with the help of the prostitute.

I'm talking about how he presents himself as an educated but not obnoxious business like person unlike his lawyer friend in the same movie Geroge Costanza, now he was not a classy guy from the very start... Yeah I agree at first his response to the prostitute was at first unclassy but she was a prostitute nontheless... how does one approach a prostitute... maybe Charlie Sheen or Hugh Grant... both sleaze can give us clues.

Im not sure obnoxious is the antonym to class. You can have social graces and not have class.

The way he treated the prostitute showed he didnt really have class. He just appeared to.

i think that was the point of the movie ;)

Yeah, I think Jerry has a point here. You might have either.... or neither.

As to the movie references, I'm not feeling it on those. Brosnon and Gere were both eloquent in the way they presented themselves ("social class"?) but I don't think either were model examples of class.

Maybe that's what this thread needs... some real historical examples of whom we perceive as those having poise and dignity in life.
    Ghandi?
    MLK?
Any cast member from the reality show Survivor? (kidding)

On one end of the spectrum I think President Reagan had class. One the other end of the spectrum, as much as Im not a fan of his music, Jon Bon Jovi has class.

Its really hard for me to come up with examples of well known people who have class.

For the most part being famous and having class dont go together.

We're all common folks, some just have bigger bank accounts

$ is great but you cant buy class it has to b taught or learned so I'd say it comes down to very specific education

You can teach yourself w books, movies, role models, etc

"Class" in a person, not their social status, includes a bit of all of the above. It is kindness combined with style and social graces. I know some very snoby folks with style and social graces, I know some very frumpy but extremly kind priests and nuns. Having class is having a mix of all these things, it is being a well rounded but humble person, but like said else where, it can't fully be defined, but you know it when you see it.

Just a few of my thoughts:

Saying the right thing at the right time.
Wearing a tux or little black dress w/ perfect fit.
Flattering one’s company subtly in a crowd.
Ensuring your date is honored before you.
Having a keen sense of “good taste” internationally.
Handling the agony of defeat w/ grace.
Not ordering a Budweiser long neck at a black tie event – or doing so.

I would say being attentive to people who are around you, patient and forgiving with others and their problems, and avoid being offensive in public settings.

And to William's credit, I remember the very first time we met years ago at an event in New Orleans - he immediately treated me [and everyone else I saw him interact with] as a friend.

I was called "Classy" last Saturday,,, Went to dinner with an attorney friend and his wife from a small town, the reservations were for 90 minutes, the other guests showed up late due to tardiness with only 15 min left in our 90 minutes so when asked to leave the attorney begins to slaughter the innocent waitress as only a small town arrogant attorney can do. My wife and I were sooo embarrassed. He actually made her cry, demanded free food, and didn't tip.

After everyone left I ran back in and gave the waitress $20.00 and told her she did a great job with our table and apologized for our "friend" My wife said I was "classy" and I got some nookie.. :)

Ok I'm going out on a limb here but Ghandi to me was not 'class', he was more a priest/meditator/philosopher, etc. and I bet if he was in the social circles of the US or Europe with the elite crowd he wouldn't be the way he was which was a man of wisdom.

'Class' I believe again after thinking about it are a 'cultured, educated, humble, polite, well positioned /groomed, and enjoys the fine things in life' but knows when to be generous, unselfish, able to overcome his status or position in life, can become a 'small person' if need be and still retain his class doing so...

Those that rise to the top and thumb their noses to the humble below him/her are in my opinion classless people, we read about them every day in the news tabloids, etc.
