I am about to pull the trigger on an '86 328, and have made the purchase contingent upon (among other things) a full set of original service manuals.

Can someone explain what constitutes a full, original set, and what i should expect?

    Hi, welcome..

In a leather pouch should be Owner's Manual, US Dealer Directory, and specific to the car a Warranty Service coupon book with the VIN and tear out coupons where the tech has perfomed the tasks and signed off..

Several sites sell them, see ************.com or ferrariliterature.something is the guy in Florida.

I have them for early 308s maybe a later owner will chime in.

    Good Luck!

There are no real "service manuals" for a 328 in the conventional sense.

There's a spare parts catalog, a wiring diagram, and a general workshop manual that covers the 308/328 -- mostly engines. There are also various Service Bulletins, recall lists, and tech specs documents.

You might google for "ferrari documents" to see what's available online.

I scanned a few of these books from local shops for my '88, but it takes a CD-rom to carry them all. (I may have gone overboard on the scan resolution, but I wanted to be able to read the tiny fine print parts.)

To complicate matters, the spare parts catalog is intended as a "living" document -- with updates as part numbers are updated: which is where the service bulletins come in, too.

The only "step by step" service instructions you're likely to find would be by doing a search on Fchat. ;)

It is easier to find good manuals than a good car - if you have the latter to be honest I think its a bad move to make the sale contingent on the supply of handbooks too - especially as it seems you do not know what you require

My '87 has: Owners manual, service/warranty book, oil spec sheet, consumer info booklet. When I bought the car it was said to have "all books and tools" -- who knows...

Thanks everybody - that was helpful.

BTW, the contingency about the manuals was a minor one: the major contingencies were passing CA emissions (legal requirement anyway) and complete service history. the "dealer" who has the car on consignment seemed to have problems getting details of the car's service history from the owner, plus the "dealer" seemed to have problems understanding the meaning of the term "service history" - that's what raised the red flag. I will post progress if and when it happens...

Looks like everything to me, Bullfighter. Thanks for posting the pic!

That's what is referreed to as "books", IMO..

I have accumulated the other stuff for my 308GTB, sales brochure, Parts Catalog, and Service Bulletins (That is a thick stack of paper)......

Only thing I'm missing is the INFAMOUS hanging tag with clock instructions...

No matter, one of them is broken and the other one is STOLEN! LOL!

I'd just go with a good inspection on this car if all Service Records are incomplete..that's why it's nice to find the Warranty Book and see where the 'deferred maintenance' begins!!!!

I would not pass up a nice car due to gaps in history.....they can usually be rebuilt after purchase as you find previous owners...

I did find a piece of the string, though.....on the stem.

I thought that was amazing, after 30 years!

Save it. The original string is probably expensive.
