Out for a chilly early morning drive on the country roads at dawn, tooling along with the top down when I peek in the rearview to note a silver Maranello had snuck up on me from behind and was nary 5 yards off my stern, With a nice straight then some twisties ahead, I goosed it, and the big 12 stayed glued until the second turn, when the capabilities of the 355 (certainly not its driver) opened up a yawning gap quite quickly. Burble. Burble. Snort.

This 355 is something. I took it out on the new track at Monticello a couple weeks back, and the car is so vastly more capable than I am it was astonishing. Kind of like discovering your wife has an Olympic 100 meter gold medal stuck in her dresser drawer. I imagine the F1 and all the electronics make the later cars even more absurdly proficient, but what a joy to take those rolling curves in such an elegantly balanced machinethat still leaves the driving to you.

Happy that Mr. Law was sleeping in. Stopped for two sets of deer and then later three huge wild turkeys who stood in the middle of the road trying to figure out how to get over the guard rail and the stream beyond. They took turns stepping back, taking two running steps, barely getting airborne, and flapping like crazy to clear everything and make it to the woods. Then they stopped, regrouped, and watched as I drove on. Nature and an open car.
