need some help here please. i own an absolutely superb 348ts. in excellant condition, the best ive seen. the 348 tends to just go into the shop when it needs something done, although the other day the gearshifter linkages came loose, and i decided to get under it and fix it myself rather than take it to the shop, which i really enjoyed. i had the confidence to do the work myself having had a look thru the tecnical Q and A section on this website, so thanks to all for that. anyway, i had so much fun i wondered about a bit of a hobby car. one that i can tinker on fairly easily. im no great mechanic, im 40, but used to spend my life under cars in my early youth. (didnt we all?) ive also got a fairly hectic work schedule, so a car thats always up on blocks wouldnt be any good - rather repairs and tweeking that adds value or enhances whats already there. ive looked at 328 but they are all a bit dated and a bit 80s in thier appearance. just my opinion, i know a lot of you own them, so dont anyone get thier noses out of joint please. im looking at a 308 GT4 at the moment. older i know, but hey, so am i, and there is just something about them that when they are in concourse condition i think they look great. but you guys all know about so many others, i was hoping for some suggestions as to what others might be worth a look? any ideas? im in new zealand, so telling me there is one in texas worth a look at is probably not a lot of help, but if you give me some models that look good and/or hold their value well, ill see whats around down here in new zealand. appreciate any suggestions you might have. cheers

Check out Ferrari North America's "Past Models" index and you'll see pictures and detailed descriptions of all the Ferraris you could ever want.

    http://www.ferrariusa.com/GTCars/PastModels.asp?content=PastModels

There are still more Ferraris in existence than the ones in that index. Go to Ferrari's official web site at www.ferrari.com and then click "Cars;" then click on "Yesterday;" then click on "Road;" and then click a decade to browse through the cars.

    Dear kiwi348,

Since the 3x8's look "a tad dated in red", please have any and all owners who don't want their car to send it to me.

    Thank you. :)

Well, I'd not reccommend any Ferrari for a beginner. You need to understand the basics of a DOHC engine carb engine. Since you want to tinker, I assume FI and computer cars are out. I'm a lot like you, but no tinkering experience as a kid. I bought my 72 Lotus Europa in 2001, went though some terrible times with a poor mechanic and finally decided I can screw up my car cheaper than he can.

Well, I've changed the master cylinder, bypassed the boosters, timed the engine, rebuilt and synched the carbs, installed electronic ignition, repaired the shift linkage....everything except an engine rebuild. If you want a really fun car to drive that has the exotic appeal of a Ferrari, I'd recommend a Twin Cam engined Europa. Excellent examples sell for $12-14k (if you can find one), and I guarantee you'll still be wrenhing a lot anyway. You'll be amazed how quick and fun these cars are, and you'll get back what you paid for it when it's time to move on.

Nice! The Elise IS a modern Europa. It will be quicker than your 348 but not faster. It will corner a lot faster though. You'll have to tell us which car gets more attention!

I'm like the Elise too but my next toy will be a Ferrari, not another Lotus. I want to try the F car and see how I like it.

like anything, its just personal preference. same as some like ferraris in off colours and some dont. maybe the 308/328's i see here in new zealand have not been looked after as well as others around the world? who knows?
