Since I bought my mondy 6 years ago I have used Castrol Rs. I have also read several threads in the Usa/worldwide sections where people swear by Redline oil. I have found a Uk supplier who sells it at around the same price as mobil 1 or castrol Rs. I just wanted to get a general opionion on what all of the Uk users use
If you are trackign the car I think a mondial needs a 10-60 and have been very happy with Castrol EDGE SPORT 10W-60. Funnily enough their site also recomends this grade. I went back to Helix thsi year and dotn think I get the maintained pressure at high temps.
Thats interesting, I know you Hillclimb yours, I'm still tempted to race mine in the Ferrari Open Challenge in the near future (finances pending). I really liked the idea of Redline as so many Ferraris in the States use it without problem, although after reading here I think i'll go for Shell Helix (Unless someone convinces me otherwise), although when I just checked I read that 'Edge Sport' is the replacement for Rs which I was using anyway.
Pete - I would be tempted to go with Walclare on this if you are going to track the car. Shell Helix 5/40 will be fine for normal road use but the 10/60 is designed to handle the higher engine temperates encountered on the track. It would be great if you did enter the Ferrari Open Challenge - I for one would certainly come & watch.
I don't know if they allow you to do the odd one or if you have to pay for a whole season/series, I like the idea of doing my local track (Snetterton) for now, I also presume that I would need a cage for that series, I would have to find someone who could fabricate me a lightweight but strong cage, unless anyone on here has one kicking about their garage they would sell ;-)
It would be fine in most circumstances but rather than me expose my ignorance on yet another subject, google 'engine oil viscosity' and you will kick up a fair few results.
i'll do that tomorrow, its far too late for me to think!!, I know there is someone who contributes on the worldwide sections (AeHaas I think), and he is a bit of an expert when it comes to oil, so maybe i'll delve into a few worldwide threads and see what he has to write
I use Silkolene ProS 10w50 synthetic. Its a bit of an unusual choice, but Agip 10w50 is specified but no longer made. Silkolene ProS is a full ester based synthetic, a bit more expensive than Castrol or Mobil, but small change really. Steve
After reading all your comments, its now a toss up between http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Castrol-Edge-10W-60-For-BMW-M-Series_W0QQitemZ8053764727QQcategoryZ72205QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AGIP-RACING-10w-60-Fully-Synthetic-Oil-Car-4-Ltr_W0QQitemZ8051920134QQcategoryZ72205QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
It is the only synthetic available here in 10w50. I believe there is also a Valvoline in 10w50 but i cannot source it. Those who serviced my Boxer prior to me buying it used Castrol RS 10w60, but I would prefer to use the correct viscosity oil and the Silkolene is a better oil than Castrol. Its an ester based oil like Redline, Amsoil, Motul, Valvoline. steve
Dumb question time, what is ester based, I have seen semi synthetic and fully synthetic, is ester based semi?
I am in desperate need of help regarding oil! I have a 78 Dino GT4, and can not find an oil that agrees with it. I am currently running GTX Magnatec 10W/40 which seems OK for normal motoring but as soon as you use it at speed and get the oil really hot (i.e. i drove from Heathrow to Ipswich - quite quickly) the pressure dies. Prior to the long drive the oil pressure never dropped below 3 on the scale, and now when hot it drops to just a fraction over zero. - change the oil and the pressure is fine again.... until i cook the oil a couple of times. In your opinions is this an oil problem (wrong oil)? or do I have a pump problem (but why would new oil make a difference)? I am tempted to use Helix, but if the oil dies after one fast trip I would be gutted! I have changed the pressure sender unit and checked all the connections etc..
Nick If your oil is dying after only a couple of spirited drives you may want to send a sample off for analysis, rather than the oil being at fault you could be over fueling with petrol thining the oil down etc, a chemical analysis should tell you what's happening to the oil (whats your oil temp hitting?) have a search through the tech section for oil tips from people who really know engine oil (it can get a bit complicated.....confused the hell out of me anyway!) Personaly for a gt4 I'd go for a hign quality modern semi synth or heavier synth (rather than the usualy availble 0w40) have a look at the miller oils range (www.demon-tweeks.co.uk)we use them in older Ferrari's (Dino's etc)
The above are suggestions from a professional - here are the suggestions from the Mickey Mouse end of the market... 1. Get your Oil Temperature gauge calibrated/checked to ensure that you haven't got a oil cooling problem (dry sumped car?) 2. Try an oil that is aimed at a higher temperatue range i.e. 10-50 as opposed to 0-40 (is that over simplistic?)
Gtx Magnatec etc... are good in normal cars, really with a Ferrari you should go for a decent oil which is why I started this thread, for the sake of a few extra pounds for oil its certainly worth it in the long run
