Thanks Brian, With a new pressure sending unit, new oil, filter and 220 F oil temp, would 50 psi at 3000 rpm be adequate, in your experience. I haven't done this yet and would appreciate your thoughts as to what to look for. Does Dr Haas's 10 psi (minimum ?), per 1000 rpm make sense to you?? thanks, chris
That should be fine. The motors are pretty understressed. The pressure has a habit of dropping fast below 3000 though. I think I would want to see at least 10-15lbs or so hot idle. Thats one of the reasons I like Redline, doesnt fall apart hot like some do.
Castrol syntec European spec. Made in Germany. Lots of additives, ZN, ect. 5-30, but acts more like 5-40. Look for "made in germany" on the back of the bottle.
Thanks Brian, I will look at the Redline products viscosity and temp performance compared to the Mobile stuff. Thanks Steve, I will also consider the Syntec German stuff as well. chris
Guy's do you know all there is to know about oil? No! Is E Hass the know all to end all? No! Every single thread on oil I learn some thing new and this recent link to Oil Engineering was very revealing and presented "New" information. I and others would like to learn more and appreciate every single contribution. I have been studying oil for years and I am still hungry for more. Oil changes yearly with new advances and it may not be important to some but I choose to be able to identify what oils are the best and for what reason. Feel free to yawn with boredom but I choose to hear and hunger for more.
Gary, I applaud your enthusiasm, I just don't want to melt the motor - now if you want to talk about brakes... best, chris
Actually it is Castrol Syntec 0w-30. You can only find it at Autozone. It is very popular with the BMW crowd, as it meets most of the current BMW and Mercedes specs. It is a bit "thick" for a 30 weight (as you mention) and is very close to a 40 weight at operating temp. Learn more about it at www.bobistheoilguy.com I have used it for a couple years now in my 2001 540 M-Sport.
I use Castrol Syntec 5-50 and Vavoline Syn Power 20-50 depending what is in the TR at the time. The F shop had synthetic 0-50 in it according to the last oil change paper work. I also use Mobil One 5-20 in the Navigator and am changing the 63' Vette to full synthetic 30 wt. I am glad you asked, made me check the TR. Found a little oil weeping from the front of the cam cover on the pass. side. Checked the torque on the cover nuts. All were needing snugging up about a 1/4 turn and one was loose where the oil leak was. I guess we missed checking final torque on that one fastener. I hope that is all that is needed since the TR had a complete engine out P.M. and all drive train updates current to early 2005 with 3,400 miles. Now I have 8,900 miles.
AEHaas sugest to use the Castrol Syntec European 0-30 which he said a much better oil for my car so I'm going to try to swith from Amsoil to Castrol on my next oil change.
As always, excellent post AEHass. Got caught out by the Mobil 1 0W-40 change in formula and think it may have caused some problems... How are we to ever really know when an oil manufacturer changes their formula to be less robust than their same-packaged previous releases? Chris, FYI in the 308 here i tried 5W-30 for winter and it is fine provided ambient was below 60F imo. Over 60F the oil was too thin (for my liking) and the pressure was too low (imo). Just trying to help. Am right now is the same situation as you, since Mobil changed their furmula and am searching for something else. The info at http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html seems interesting, maybe Shell Rotella 5W-40 synth would be good? i'm going to give it a go for latespring to fall use even though a 0W oil is personally preferred.
Yes parkerfe Castrol finally has a "real" synthetic oil, all the others have been hydrocracked dino oils. This 10w60 is purported to be a good one with real syn. basestocks. Hooray! long overdue, the rest of their product line are pretenders.
It has been out a long time...at least 7 years as it was specified for my 2000 M5 as well as my current 2006 M5...
In the day (1931) oil varied a bit. My Studz has an adjustable oil psi system so you can adjust your psi to what you put in. In my race boat the oil gets to 325 degrees. I use Mobil One 50W which has worked nicely. In my Dusey and Studz I use Rotella 40W which I also use in MK-IV/166/P 3/4/412P and Lola. Maser uses Agip 0-40 P Turbo Mobil One 0-40 P 4/5 Shell Helix So far all is good.
