I am about to change oil in my 1986 328 GTS for the first time :). I am curious what oil other owners of 328 use. I have researched the archieves and I am more confused now than ever. I have even sent a PM to Ali Haas, the oil expert, to get his input. I called the shop where the previous owner had it serviced and they indicated that they put Shell Helix 5W 40 in the last oil change. I would prefer not to use this again.

I leave in MN and will be storing the car in the winter. I do not track the car and mainly drive it on weekends.

I would appreciate others input regarding the type and weight of oil you use or recommend.

    Thanks.

I use Mobil1 15W-50 but Napa has a lower-priced oil of the same viscosity so I may switch to that. The car has been fine, but it's only been 6 months.

A 328 came from the factory with Agip SINT2000 10w50 which is a synthetic oil. Since it is impossible to find a 10w50 oil theses days, I recommend Mobile1 15w50, which is what I use in my Boxer as well. I would never use a 0w oil unless the OM recommends it. And, I would not use anythingthinner than a 50. So, that leaves you with 15w50 or 20w50. Since the 15w is closer to the 10w as recommended by Ferrari, that's what I would use.

89's came with 10-40. I don't know when the change occurred. With modern oils, 50 weight is considered by many to be too heavy except for high heat (like track) conditions.

I changed oil today. I ended up using Castrol GTX 20w/50. Used 9 1/2 quarts to bring it to full with filter replacement.

So far the oil pressure readings are vertical (85) but a little higher than with the 5w-40 Shell Helix.

It won't be long until it is put away for the winter, so I have all winter to decide what to use for the spring oil change.

Frank, I've been putting the Mobil1 in my 328 as well, but NAPA has their own 15w50 which is 30% less expensive. It is made for them by Ashland Oil. I don't see why it wouldn't work as well, do you?
