Any suggestions on the best choice for oil for a 1988 Testarossa? I dont know what the previous owner used ... Is synthetic better for this car?

    Thanks,
    J

Why don't Ferrari owners use real castor oil anymore? ;)

The TR came from the factory with a synthetic oil from Agip...so I would stay with a synthetic oil. I use Mobile 1 15w50 in the summer and castrol Syntec 5w50 in the winter in my BB512i which has an earlier version of the same engine as a TR.

I've used Redline 20w50 and am using Mobil 1 15w50 right now. I'd stick with a synth if I were you.

I use Mobil 0W-40 year round. The Boxer 12 can be a little harsh at startup, the 0W synthetic should help in protecting the engine, especially in the colder climates. Since you are in Texas, so this may not be as important to you. The factory does recommend 10W-40 as that was the only ones available from Agip (their F1 sponsor) at the time, so you can see that the 0W-40 is well within and better than the recommended spec. Hope this helps.

Was Agip 10w40 what Ferrari recommended for a TR? Agip 10w50 is what Ferrari recommended for the BB512i. I have never had a leak in my Boxer although I have always used synthetic oils...nor in any of my other Ferraris for that matter. FYI, synthetic oils DO NOT cause leaks.

I use the Agip Sint2000 also. You will run into probs if you run only synthetic. Too many leaks.

Gotta disagree with that statement. My Tr has been BONE DRY since I've had it with nothing but synthetics.

Not an oil issue, the engine seals are the problem.

us M1 0-40 year round. Shell/AGIP is NLA at retail and 0-40 is better than 5-40 for my use.

Here in Britain, I have been using Shell 5-40W as recommended by the specialist dealer and service centre which looks after my car (although oddly enough, after a service, they leave a can of Agip in the trunk for my use).

I note that Shell are beginning to offer 0-40W and it seems that some of you like Mobil oil of a similar weight, so I might try it.

I have the feeling that TR engines benefit in the long run from the better all-round qualities offered by synthetics. Dr Haas is probably the person to ask why.

When I bought my car it was filled with Castrol synthetic 10w60. I have just finished replacing a leaking cam cover gasket and am about to refill with oil but have doubts about using the same again, not sure what to use?

ASG 86TR, FYI Agip Sint 2000 is a synthetic oil, albeit a blend!
