i was watching legendary motorcars - they has applied some type of "new" product to some factory metal parts which removed surface rust and they looked new...

i have some old factory tools and some other pieces with surface rust i'd like to clean up......

what about surface rust on underside areas of cars ?

i've found some "rust" encapsulation products but i do not think that is what i am looking for...

    any ideas ?

I threw some rusty tools in a plastic tray and poured household vinegar
Over them, 2 days later, like new. I stripped the paint off my shift paddles that way
also, one day later, paint just fell off....
    No dangerous chemicals.

You might try some CLR. It is supposed to work very well and I have seen some great before and after pictures on rusty cars.

In my experience those products which "convert" rust ie. paint a milky liquid on that goes black/blue just don't last. I've tried numerous other ones too and they always seem to come back after just a few weeks no matter how carefully I follow the instructions.

However, I have had great success with those products that dissolve rust by adding what looks like a white powder to water and soaking the item until the rust has gone - see pics of numberplate holder.

For chassis pieces or in my case my door you can buy it in gel form as well. After dissolving all the rust I use Por-15 metal prep then Por-15 rust preventative paint and in all the cases that Ive used it its not come back - hoorah!!!!

Theres more details and pics in my thread below but heres a couple a few pics:

Use the gel form as per I did on door followed by the por15. Looks a very mild case of rust but no harm in tackling it early :)
