In other words, from your experience, of all the people buying new models, what percentage would you say are poseurs vs. true enthusiasts?

I would say true enthusiasts buy F-cars with the 6 speed manual trans., but I also know a lot of manual 360 owners jumping to a 430 F1 so it's hard to say...

I don't really know but if you are looking for "poseurs" you might find them more probably on the secondary (used cars) market, rather then new Ferrari purchasers.
Simple reason:the difficulty of obtaining one from a dealer if you are not a regular Ferrari buyer/owner and if you do not have a really good relationship with him.

Define poseur. You mean can't really afford it? Don't know how to drive it? Don't know anything about Ferrari heritage? Can't change their own oil?

a non-enthusiast. Maybe someone who doesn't know the difference between an F40 and an F1. He drives a 430 for the same reason paris hilton drives an SLR.

One of my neighbors is a total poseur. There are quite a few high end cars such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Aston etc in my neighborhood and out of all of them, he is the one everyone laughs about. This turd drives his 360 around the neighborhood (25MPH area) in 1st gear with a high rev so everyone can hear him coming/going... so cool. Gives bad names to true enthusiasts.

Ive heard from someone who has driven every modern Ferrari extensively, and daily drives an E36 M3, and prefers a full manual transmission, that the 6-speeds on 360s and 430s arent at all fun to drive, and kind of junky feeling compared to a F1. Same person also told me that the 355s had amazing 6-speed transmissions. So 6-speed through the 355, and then F1 for a 430.

    Thats a difficult question....

Most of us work and have a family. The only time we can drive the damn thing is when we have a spare few hours.

And usually end up taking the woman along, out for dinner or drinks and parking it close to the joint because we're to tired to walk very far and worried about the lunatics who lean on it and take pictures....

If thats considered "poseur" then you may be right, but all owners don't have the luxury of going to the track or hitting the hotspots and cruises every weekend.

OK, I gotta bite. I daily drive an e36 M3. I have a 430 6 speed. I have owned one F1 vehicle. I know the F1 system is "the best yet" on a 430--but it is still a 6 speed for me. I know you didn't say it, but to say that a 6 speed 430 isn't fun to drive is ludicrous.

Who cares what the reasons are that a person drives a Ferrari? I'm sure there are some people who would drive a Porsche if they believed it was more popular or more in. As long as the person enjoys what they are doing, I don't see how they are a poseur. I look at poseurs like I look at fair weather fans. They'll move on to something else soon enough. They are people who follow the crowd.

I don't really know or care that much about the F40 or F1, and I don't know much about the 430. But I have loved the 308 since I was a child. My appreciation for the 308 has not diminished as the years go by. The only reason I was thinking about buying a 328 or 348 is because there is a boost in performance, but they still retain much of the same lines and styling as the 308. Even the Testarossa keeps many of the same lines. The newer Ferraris have lost that distinctive design.

I like the late 70's, 80's, and early 90's Ferraris, but I don't like the late 90 or 2000 Ferraris? I think the 456, for example, looks like an ordinary car. The 456 could be parked next to a Toyota Celica and it would not stick out the same way a 308 or Testarossa would.

The poseurs don't bother me because they will buy the new Ferrari at a high price, and sell it a couple years later at a discount. What interests me more is what my cars can do, how well they perform, and how much I enjoy them.

Easy now equating F1 with "poseur"! I'm quite familiar with other 6-spds, but love my 355 F1. Been wearing the shirts and hats for years, been to 4 grand prix's, had the Schumacher poster in my garage for years.

To me, poseur is a non-car nut who just wants to flaunt wealth. Not someone who wants an experience similar to a Grand Prix car...

Good one. I suspect a poseur by definition wouldn't be on this site to begin with. Sorry if you were offended ;-)

I only ask because most of the people I encounter in and around manhattan who own new ferrais are the type flaunting wealth. I wondered what other people's experiences are.

no clue but I'd guess there r lots more poseurs in newish cars vs classics

I love the 430 spider but in SoBe you see lots of Ferraris so I guess bcus of the concentration of owners you have a high % of poseurs

Dude, if they bought the car they get the keys!

No such thing as a posuer there..

Now, the guy that wrecked the Enzo in France with the cheating wife at his elbow......;)

Now, the guy in Dallas that borrowed his brother in law's car and was killed in it...;)

The Gizmondo Enzo wanker in California...............;)

Those are folks that should have spent a little more time in karts and driving school!!!!!

The guy in England that rolled and burned the F430 with his teenaged daughter was a nice guy by all reports, so he was legit!

    Still dead, though...........

If you are a poor driver you should practice!

In a safe place rather than on public roadways.......that's why the dealer here sponsors Track Days........

I think it's a case of the car's performance taking people by surprise, especially the Enzo.....public road engineering does not support those speeds.

Racing and on track experience teaches you to push your vision further out as speed goes up, also trains in vehicle dynamics and skid recovery skills....

Let me rephrase my last post and add a few questions to our esteemed owners.......

What percentage of enthusiasts/poseurs are skilled F drivers?

And does being a poor driver mean you are a poseur????

What is the defining point between poseur and true enthusiast?

Is admiration earned by showing (display) your vehicles or driving them?

If that's your definition then all Ferrari owners are poseurs. After all, you can buy so many other sports cars that perform so much better than a Ferrari for a fraction of the price why would anyone other than a showoff buy a Ferrari?
