Stupid question, I know, because the answer is "it depends"...

It depends on condition, lielage, service history, etc.....

But let's say it was '75 with under 50K miles, no/minimal rust, moderately worn interior, no service records but running well. Everything works.

In the current market, what would your thoughts on value be?

    Thanks!

19K - 21K US assuming it is current on the maintenance. Assuming Red w/tan interior, off colors deduct at least 10%. Hard to say unless if you can see the car upclose. JMHO.

If you are referring to the blue Ferrari 308GT4 on Ebay, let me clarify some issues with the description in the ebay ad. I went and spent some time with the 308GT4 on Ebay and found the following:
    - Paint on car is the 2nd or 3rd repaint over the original and is very evident by the overspray on some plastic components and edges
    - Interior is far from "everything is like new" scale 1-10? I would give it a 4, door panels are dried out, dash is lifting in places, driver side panel almost came off when shutting the door, steering wheel poorly recovered, interior lighting on doors panels do not work, missing interior light at rear, a very tired interior, door markers don't come on
    - "runs excellent" - besides the loud clattering from the smog pump which made it difficult to hear engine, it did idle steady with some hunting and the oil pressure looked good at idle and at 3500 rpm
    - "vehicle in good condition" - fair condition would be more accurate

All together, besides the paint, some rust, the poor interior condition, you can get a Ferrari Dino cheap. At the present 12,600, I wouldn't go any higher. Someone is in for a surprise if they didn't inspect the car.

Interesting. It seems like it is getting really hard to find a nice, clean GT4. It's really a shame, but it seems that alot of them are just going to pot. Hopefully, those of us who care for our cars will oneday see prices appreciate as the good ones become rarer and rarer.

Thank you for the replies....I think I'm better off looking for a little newer 308.

A genuine excellent condition one is getting very hard to find. I actually think a really spectacular one will sell for closer to 30k. Are there many 79 models in the US?

Actually, by looking at that EBAY one, the photos do show a very tired paint job, but it only hints at the interior being very tired. That GT4 wasn't garaged or was driven in a harsh climate, too bad. Yeah, 13K tops for that one. I just put all new interior lights on mine because my original lights were dulling and the chrome was pitting. Those lights are not cheap. It all adds up. A complete new interior runs around 4K minimum if you shop around, 5.5K if you don't. New dash is around 2K. The body will need a complete stripping. the claimed mileage on that GT4 is pure BS.

Unfortunately these terrific cars are in the "I can buy it but not maintain it" catagory. I sold mine, which was in terrific condition, in the mid-20K range. Maybe I should have kept it!

He's referencing the neophyte owner, I believe.....

They are the same $$$$ as the later 308GTBs to maintain.....not too bad really, IMO.

The savvy owner has about $5k set aside in addition to the purchase...contingency fund....

    No, total!!!

And I mean 'money in the bank", not necessarily to spend, but just in case.

The problem with a lot of the older GT4s is the P.O. thought "Oh 18K and I'm done" and financed for 72 months....

Well, in my first 72 months I blew both headers (1,400US), rebuilt four carbs (1,600US), both distributors (1,000US), and couple of water pumps ($600 each), a radiator ($400), and most recently the muffler/exhaust assembly ($1,700), two clutches ($1,200US + $1,800US)

So, well before the new stereo and lots of 20-50W and NGK BP5ES, you have some significant upkeep to keep it 'right'. If you are not ready for this, it's up on jackstands for awhile........

I had an 850 Spider once as a high school kid...

It came to me without a gas cap......I didn't think much about it until the rain water rusted the fuel tank out about two weeks later!!!

Maybe it all started back then....in 1974.......

I know you've been looking for awhile, but I think your odds are actually better in the EU that you'd find a well loved and cared for example.

Over here, they drove the owners crazy, and tire tool damage and bullet holes are not uncommon.......

Plus we got the ugly bumpers.....

Belts last a lot longer than many think...It's vital to totally replace the tensioner rollers at the same time, however.

My last purchase I drove four days non stop 3,200 miles on 12 year old belts, they were 1,000 miles old.

Then I drove it about 600 miles plus events at the recent FFQC in Louisiana.

I will most likely remove these over winter due to age and peace of mind, but they are still "there"!!!!!!

So really those you have are good for another four years of normal use. I'd go with every five years as a comfortable max. Easily the most discussed topic on these cars. Few facts and multiple opinions!

No. That's not my implication at all. I'd guess that in the three years I owned my GT4 i averaged around $1200/year. I had a local independent do all the services, including oil changes, carb set-ups and the like. If you have the time and aptitude, it's a pretty easy car to work on yourself.

It's just that, as Big Tex said, a lot of people have bought them and thought they would never have to do anything other than an occasional oil change. When they see he first estimate from a Ferrari mechanic, they stop maintaining the car. I also agree that a contingency fund is wise. If for no other reason than it will eventually need a major!
