Hi, i think ernie will answer this one for me but any help please, i have a 348 and is 1991 car, what should the gear change be like from both cold and fully warmed up, mine is a bit of a handfull but was told today many are like it, as i have said before i have just changed the gear oil to castrol syntrax, im thinking of doing it again as the oil appeared a little dirty, i have also just purchased a slick 50 gearbox friction reduser treatment, has anyone had results from this, is it ok to use any way !!!, i hope so as the stuff cost £15.99 and is only 80 ml, thanks all, lee.

There's as many answers to this question as there are 348's. Some will swear changing gear oil makes all the difference, others (myself included) say it doesn't make any difference at all. Almost all will say there is a difference between cold and warm shifting, but the 348 gearbox is the worst part of the car IMO.

so is it regarded as a poor shifting gearbox, is it normal to be hard to change gears, i dont want the hassle of reving the engine every time im changing gears to allow easier shifts ( i havnt tried this but my friend did and said it changed the gears better ), thanks, lee.

The gear box is described as being "notchy" I wouldn't worry about it if your just having troubles when it's cold, better to leave everything alone if it gets better after warm up, if however you having trouble even after warm up, somethings wrong, could be the shift linkage, under the car, which I understand is a pain to adjust, Others will offer other solutions I'm sure :)

I don't find the shifting to be any different than any other car. Other than the occasional need to play with shifter when selecting first gear (depending on how I stopped and whether I'm on a hill I may need to let the car roll a bit) once warmed up the car shifts no differently than any other. On the track at speed I have never missed a gear or a shift. When cold 2nd is stiff and I usually go right to 3rd, just because I can.

I have the same problem with my 348 - 2nd gear is sometime impossible even with the car properly warmed up. All other gears seem to be ok. I can shift ok when it's at a standstill at traffic lights.

what happens when you try to shift up or down to 2nd?
can you shift into 2nd when standing still?
have you had any specialist to check it out?

is your difficult to shift or wouldn's shift at all. mine wouldn't shift at all, but sometime shift with no problem, and it always shifts when car at a standstill.

iv had no specialist look at it yet, i want to try the gearbox fluid with slick 50 again first, to be honest my gearbox and this is going to sound strange shifts worse when its warmed up, but shes better when warmed up to engage secound if you can understand where im coming from, my friend adjusted the biting point so it was further up the pedal-no difference, he said that the clutch must be disengaging properly then, so he adjusted it back nearer the floor, iv also tried from standstill engage first and see if the car wants to move forward with the clutch right in, christ its doing my head in, have you had trouble with the slow 1/4 lights?, lee.

I'm not familiar what 1/4 lights are.

Does yours shift into 2nd when you stop at traffic light?

When cold mines hit and miss, I just use the gear I can. I never downshift into 2'nd when rolling, it just dosen't want to unless I force it. At a standstill I can go anywhere..When warm. I'm not much on double clutching, heel and toeing, etc, but I understand this can help.

if you are still moving then its very hard but if you are at stand still then probably be ok, iv known it to almost bang into secound when moving, some times crunches, but iv been told that if your cables are out of adjustment or the gear stick isnt in the right place then all hell brakes loose. The banging and crunching are not always the case, some days and its not often she shifts lovely, or maybe i have more strengh in my arm to change those gears !!!

If you haven't already tried, just remove the gate, if your misaligned you'll shift easier.

Well, see if you can get it in any gear easier, if not then that's not the problem, if so then the linkage needs adjusting.

my slow light problem is when you start the car she starts on 4 then after a few secounds goes onto 8 banks, when driving the car can suddenly go onto 4, its to do with the cat ecu's, if there shot they shut down one bank of cylinders, its a common thing, iv just replaced both lamda's thinking it was that but i was gutted when it still did the same thing!!!!!

My 1991 348ts shifted notchy till warm always..... I owned that car for six years changed around gear oil many times. The best was the red line with an additive but just marginal difference from Mobil one. I used to let it sit running intil hot then go!!! Second gear balked this awful sound on screw up shifts even warm when caning it !!!! 95% OF THE TIME WARM THIS CAR SHIFTED PERFECT..... Unlike the 355 or 360 these cars have to be mastered on shifting......
