I know I am on a roll here, lots of questions but I am taking my 78 308 apart and it's quite exciting, sort of like venturing into a lil boys dream as I dig further, looking what comes out underneath each part that I remove.

Anyways, I removed the exhaust from the cats onward and am currently facing the task on how to get the manifold off the engine, needless to say it looks impossible. Which special tool can I purchase that will enable me to do that?
OR.... does anybody have pictures on how they did it?

    Thanks,
    Helmut

I took mine off several years ago, in fact it was in 1997. I forgot what I used since it was so long ago, but it was just a regular socket set. Something like a 10mm or 12mm if I remeber correctly. Sorry, its been a while. Just becareful, the bolts tend to rust in place, I broke one of mine. There is like a spring built into the bolts as well. Its a ***** geeting it back in, but I was able to do it by myself. Good luck.

Rear header is easy. 13mm wrench. Access through passenger side wheel well. Front header bolts can be undone from above/below/side. Requires you either pull the motor or remove passenger gas tank to get it out. Regular tools/sockets, just long extensions.
I used PB Blaster on the threads. The exhaust nuts came off easily.

Go ahead & pull every thing from the header outlet flanges on back. s/b all 13mm bolts, but often someone's used some fraction bolts on the exhaust flanges.

I just pulled my '82 QV's rear header to get at the differential housing.

Once the rest of the exhaust system is out of the way, you can use a couple of long extensions to go in from behind & easily get most of the header's manifold flange nuts off. The other nuts are accessable either from on top, or thru the passenger side wheel well.

Once disconnected, It's easiest to pull the rear header up between the engine & the luggage compartment. On your '78 you'll have to loosten & move the coolant recovery tank out of the way.

A Euro header will come out under the bumper, but the little pulleys for the brake cable will have to be unbolted to get them & the cable out of the way. It's a tight fit, lots of twisting to get it thru. Will scrape the rust off of it a bit in the process.

Not sure that a US spec header with the heat shields covering it can come out thru there..

Allright, here I go... thanks for the info, I just wanted to make sure its doable with what I have got as it doesn't look easy. Nothing more frustrating than trying to do something with the wrong tools.

    Thanks,

Well, what's the ease of removing the fuel tank to get to the front headers? I'd rather leave my engine in, since I don't have a lift.....

    Piece of cake....LOL!

Really, it's the easiest way, drop the right tank and the cooling tubing. I had to unbolt the motor mounts and raise it JUST a bit to allow the swap, the old one was in several pieces........

    Small wrenchs are your friend......
