The happiest explanation is that the overflow tank is overfilled and boiled over. Remember to fill it only to the height of the indicator in the tank (you have to look for it) and not to the top!

The location of the liquid is very suspect. get your dog some glasses, he missed the wheel!:)

You could try Slowly opening the bleed valve just in front of radiator see if air comes out. Open it slowly. If you get coolant and no air thats a good sign. If you get air, then there are some things to check.

You should be able to see where the coolant came from. If it came from the surge tank overflow tube the end of the tube will be wet, the pool will be right below it, and you won't see any coolant or staining anywhere else.

Blunt but judging by the pic Tom may be right. Before jumping to any conclusions do the following:

    1. With the car cold remove the coolant bottle cap and check the coolant level. If high drain a little out. Also check the coolant itself for anything that may look like oil floating among the coolant.

    2. Inspect the underside of the coolant cap looking for oil or anything hat may look like malted milk. This could be a sign of a water/oil mix from a head gasket.

    3. Remove the oil filler cap and look for the same malted milk like fluid.

    4. Pull out your oil dipstick and check the same as above.

If all of these look ok then (assuming the level of the rad overflow is correct) button everything back up and do the following procedure :

    1. Park the car on a slight uphill incline.

    2. Make sure your interior cabin heater is set to full hot

    3. Open the front hood and loosen the bleed screw on the top of the radiator. Half to one turn will do.

    4. Start the car and let it warm up.

    5. Close the bleed screw when no air is coming out of the rad and only fluid leaks out. Wear heavy gloves to avoid getting burned and be sure to properly tighten the bleed screw when done.

As long as you past the first set of tests then the second set should sort out your problems. I hope this helps and lets not hope that it is a blown head gasket, cracked head, or block.

Tom is being kind, a cracked head due to the usual corrosion is also a possible reason.
A radiator compression test will certainly confirm one way or another.

    Hoping for the best!

    Regards, Alberto

The expansion tank is fixed with oval holes to the tubular frame. So the heigth in realtion to the engine is varying individually and there is no standard answere. I would say it like this: What is too much in the expansion tank will get out over the overpressure valve in the cap. The rest will stay, in mine the level is around 50% of the filling level.

Thanks I finally found my Owners Manual (1971 GT) which Ive not sighted for about 2 years following a house move. Id forgotten what great condition my manual is in- its pristine- likely rarely left the pouch. Anyway so buried deep in the Manual are 2 references. One a schematic Page 73, which suggests fill to 5 cm from top (livello 5 cm) and the other a text ref Page 74 stating "It should be maintained approximately 3/4 full". Clearly the guy in charge of Technical Writing worked at the opp end of the factory to the Tech Illustrator.

Id guess 5 cm from the top is more like 9/10 full but there you go. So for me at 5 cm from top running two long trips in warm weather Ive had no boil over. Id rather have more coolant in the system than less but no doubt a level between would be serviceable.

    Box Ticked.
