I finally had a chance to drive my car this past weekend. Buffed and wax and looking really sharp now. Between my wife and my neighbors, I had a line for rides. I noticed there's a really annoying rattle in the back end and it's particularly noticeable when coming to a stop. I put the car on stands last night to see what was what and it appears that the heat shield on the front header and the one over the side intermediate pipe are loose (didn't check the rear though).

What (if anything) can I do about these in-situ? I can probably put a clamp on the the intermediate pipe shield to keep it from rattling but I have no idea what to do about the one on the front header.

Remove headers, cut off heat shields, send to Jet Hot for bright silver finish coating.

put back on headers, enjoy lower temps in engine compartment and better gas flow.

well, that's the hard way anyway!

I know it's not the right way, but I used some stainless steel wire to secure a rattling shield on my Honda. It's been working for years.

I agree that this is the best way. However, I'd rather do this in a couple of years when I pull the engine for service and to fix my 2nd gear synchro. Right now I'm just looking for something a little less invasive.

    Hmmm...

No, not the right way but it just might work as a temporary fix to my problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

Actually...keeping them on will keep more heat in the headers/exhaust pipes and thus provide better flow, that's why hot rodders wrap their headers. Honestly, I don't know how much of a difference it really makes. If you want to actually remove the headers and the rest of the system, it can be quite a job. You can use wire or a long hose clamp to secure it for now.

Very common problem with 308's,had it myself recently!

The shielding around the headers contains asbestos/rockwool (underneath, between the headers and shields)It eventually gets burnt away and then the shields start to rattle/vibrate,especially at idle!

My mechanic used very large multi grips(vice like)and squashed/tightened the shielding around the headers.(problem solved).

Other shielding was also loose/missing nuts.....you need to get car up in the air so you can inspect true nature of problem to determine a fix!

    Hope this helps!

I used large hose clamps to secure the accessible end down to the collector section. The stainless steel clamps take the heat, and have been there doing a great job since 1989. My other car, the shields were "buzzed" through the Aluminum, so I had no choice but to do the proper thing mentioned eary on in this post. Jet Hot is great!

I was able to get my heat shields secured last night and it was easier than I thought. I basically used a hammer and a punch to put a dimple in each shield. This should hold me until I have a chance to deal with it properly in a few years. Since I had the car up on stands, I started removing my stock muffler to put in the new/used Stebro -- but I'll save that for another post.

What you did was absolutely correct....

Just hammer them back tight again!

Gently...in a lady like manner! LOL!
