Wifey and I are spending Dec. 22-27 in Manhattan for the holidays.

NY being what it is.....I assume everyday is business as usual.....but what is there to do on the 25th ? Does the city shut down and everything close......or are there places to go and things to do ?

TIA for any and all suggestions.

    Shut.. down? Close?

    What do these words mean?

If the weather doesn't suck, take a heli tour, see a show, dinner, go skating in the park, etc, etc. Just make sure you make reservations WELL in advance for anything that requires them. If you don't have 'em by now, you're probably SOL, but you could get lucky.

I imagine that only some Hotels will have operational restaurants. This is the case on Sundays, as far as top places are concerned. While in Boston last Xmas day, I got a list from a hotel concierge; basically less than a dozen restaurants were open that day. I guess that the amount of customers is in line with the low supply of open places.

We're talking NYC here, not Beantown. Everything is open. Most of the major as well as minor restaurants will be serving Christmas dinners. Rockafeller Plaza is always open, go see the tree, skate on the rink, have a drink at the RockCenter Cafe. Check out the windows on 5th Avenue. Take a carriage ride through Central Park. Look around now and make reservations at a nice place for dinner (you can check out restaurants through Zagat.com or pick up the book). Maybe catch a show on Broadway, or a movie. Tons of stuff to do in NYC, even on the holidays.

TIA so far guys......I really appreciate it......will start looking for a nice restaurant reservation today, that was good advice to book early. Wifey liked the skating idea....do they rent blades at the rink ?

And FWIW.....Cscat87.......I think you were joking, but, I was in NYC 3 weeks ago......and from the people I had business and conversations with, they were truly some of the nicest and most helpful I have ever met.

If you're into opera...the Met is always open. Personally, very few things are better than going to Lincoln Center by limo for an evening at the opera. Your choices are endless, be sure to see Central Park somehow!

PS New York simply does not close shop for the holidays; no worries.

If you want some recommendations for dinner:

Bouley (Call, you could get lucky)

Le Bernardin (Best fish in the world)

    Alain Ducasse

    21 club (VERY good burger)

Might be tough getting a reservation this close to the holidaze, but they're effectively the best in NY.

    Thanks Simba......will research those tonight......

kpizz13......thanks bud.....but there'll be no opera for me.......I "have" to go to one Broadway show with wifey under penalty of withdrawl of "privileges"......if you know what I mean.....don't know if I will make it out with my sanity......

I think they usually do Handel's Messiah on Christmas eve, in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. You might want to check that out if you're looking for something to do that night. It is a spectacular production.

The last one I saw was "Cats" back in 1987 or so..........and all I can say, was that I was glad that they had a active cash bar in the theatre lobby..........LOL !! Somehow it doesn't work for me.......

We did Christmas week in NYC back in 02, it was a great time. We found the city was really quiet, although we stayed in Battery Park which is more residential.

On Christmas Day there was a snowstorm which shut a lot of the city down for a while. We went to Greenwich Village and there were some people around walking through the snow and having a fun time, very little traffic. Had dinner at a nice little Chinese restaurant sitting near the window, watching the quiet city street and big fluffy flakes under the streetlights. Was a nice Christmas.

As for shows, Lion King is supposed to be very good. Skating is a ripoff there (being Canadian where it is akin to a nationally protected right to skate), IIRC it was ~$25 for skates and a pass to skate at any of the main places. I think Central Park was cheaper than Rockefeller, but we just did the Rockefeller center a few weeks ago, and the elevator to the top was worth it (hopefully they let you outside in winter!).

Cats was... well, Cats. Good music spoiled by a marginal execution. There are much better shows on Broadway these days that you'll probably enjoy quite a bit.

... not that I'm biased, or anything. *coughcough* ;)

U might want to try Danielle's for a classy restaurant. Also its an oldy but Tavern on the Green is nice at X-mas due to all the lights in central Park around the restaurant. not to mention you can take a horse and carriage ride to the restaurant. If you want something trendy, give Tao's or BudaKhan a try. HAVE FUN and remember this is the city that never sleeps!
