I am flying into Portland on Thursday for a car buying trip and staying overnight. Probably gonna stay near the general area of Sunset Porsche (where I am having a PPI done)......if possible.

Any ideas on what a whisky guzzlin hard partyin' car guy can do for one night ? I love blues music......any cool bars within taxi distance ? Any aviation or automobile museums around....etc....etc ?

    TIA for any replies........

Evergreen Aviation Museum is in McMinnville (1 hr. drive from Sunset Porsche) - has the Spruce Goose, an SR-71 Blackbird, and lots more, but closes at 5 PM.

Sunset Porsche is in Beaverton. You don't want to stay there-- not that it's a bad neighborhood or anything (my office is not far from there), but it's boring. Stay downtown-- I recommend the Heathman or the Benson if you're going first class, or the Hotel Lucia-- also very nice.

If you don't want to rent a car, you can take the MAX train from downtown to close to Sunset-- they'll certainly pick you up at the MAX station, it's only a couple of blocks. You can even take the MAX in from the airport to downtown, and be within a block of so of any of the nice hotels.

Once you are downtown, there are lots of good options. Saucebox is fun, the Heathman has an excellent restaurant. I also recommend Southpark, a favorite of mine. You could probably find some live music around there as well, if that's what you are into, or there are a couple of movie theaters, or shopping-- no sales tax in Oregon.

If you choose to stay in Beaverton, I can make some restaurant recommendations, but I can't think of a hotel I'd stay in around there.

OK, first of all, what is the car?

donv's info is all good. My office is close to Beaverton--there are a couple of reasonable places to dine, but not anyplace special to stay. In addition to donv's suggestions, there are more excellent dining places downtown, as well as some just next store in an area called "the Pearl". If you have a food preference we can weigh in on choices.

While there are random blues artists who come to town, there is not a specific blues club that is anywhere convenient to where you might stay. One of many websites you can search is http://www.oregonlive.com/performance/

If you drive to Sunset make sure you mapquest it, the streets can be confusing.

If the McMinnville trip is too far (though really worth it), there's also the Pearson Air Museum just across the Columbia River in Vancouver. www.pearsonairmuseum.org. but it's a whole magnitude smaller. You might also enjoy the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) on the east side of town.

LOL, I'm not sure that the restaurants in the Pearl are suitable for a "whisky guzzlin hard partyin'" evening. Depending on your age, maybe Kells Irish Pub near the waterfront park. Anyone else have suggestions for him?

Is Virginia Cafe still hopping on Thursday nights? I know they're moving (or have moved), but that used to be quite the scene in the old days.

Skip the air museum...there are a half a dozen good strip clubs within 10 miles of Sunset. Some are worth the trip...Starz and Dolphin II aren't bad...entertaining at least. And, an abundance of cabs for when you're ready to depart! Get a hotel outside of Beaverton though, there aren't any real good ones near Sunset. Ask some people here about where you're staying...we'll make sure you don't end up in a dive.

That fact alone should tell you all you need to know about the neighborhood around Sunset.

His profile says dealership owner so I believe he is not joking about the whiskey and partying:) If not strip clubs, I don't see why not but you would really like this place for live music with a few cool places to grab good drinks near by: http://www.dougfirlounge.com/

Also look up things/places/music here: http://wweek.com/

HOOTER'S is near by and you should spend time at STARS (strip club) not far away! All great places for someone in the car sales biz.

My twice delayed flight arrived at 1030PM instead of noon, and by the time I hit the hotel it was 1130PM. I had to get up at 400AM that morning for the initial flight that went mechanical on the ramp, so I stayed in, and had a few beers from the minibar as I was dead beat.........geesh only $4.00 each......they were cheaper than a nightclub in Calgary. The next day after I was done my bizz I had a car drive me around after I did a quick walk thru the downtown core where I was staying. A few people I know have been there as well, and they loved it a lot.

I bought this car and resold it. A 1994 911 Speedster......
