    Hey guys,
Currently in the process of buying my second Ferrari. I had the car sent to a reputable Indy for a PPI before moving anywhere serious with the purchase. I had some expectations for the PPI that werent met. Im curious as to wether I was expecting too much, so I am here for some advice.
The car in question is a Challenge Stradale. So with the PPI I expected a thorough insepction along with an operational check of basically everything. I was expecting a report with clutch life, compression numbers, brake wear percentages, and pcitures of the overall process. I was quoted $500 for the PPI.
After the PPI was completed I only received pictures of the underside of the front bumper (scrape marks), the rear bumper wheel wells (sandblasted from rock spray), worn tires, and the compression numbers. I asked about a more formal report and was told "we only photo the bad things so you can visualize the issues" I then had to ask for clutch wear and brake wear percentages. Am I expecting too much? I was expecting something similar to a home inspection. If this is normal, I paid $500 for a compression test...Not that it couldn't have saved me money, but I feel the PPI was a waste. Thoughts?

Matt, I would've asked for a complete layout of "scope" in what that indy shop produces in their respective PPI. Different shops absolutely do different procedures, and while $500 is not insignificant, maybe they have a few different levels of PPI, and that was NOT discussed prior to the work being done. I back you 100% on the expectation that compression, clutch, brake, tire wear, hose(s) inspected, fluids checked etc etc. would be part of a "standard" procedure. To rally back though, again, you should ask for, and know exactly what was going to be gone through before they began the PPI, so on one hand, you had an expectation and I understand you likely feel you shouldn't have to ask/assume things (and I'd support that), BUT, in this day, it's best to trust, but verify, and do so prior to any work or monetary exchange. Best of luck with the Stradale.

Very true. In the end not much I can do. I guess I thought there was "standard". You are right though, in this day in age you have to verify everything. Despite this, I am still excited to enjoy the car here in a few days.

Yes, before you send someone out, YOU have to express your expectations because I'm sure that many buyers are already in love with a car and only doing a PPI at all because they heard they should.

When I sent a guy to look at the Lamborghini Diablo Roadster I ultimately bought, when I quizzed the guy what I would get from a $500 PPI, it wasn't enough for me so I ended up forking over $1,000.

Wow, it would be quite a thing to see a CS in Milton. They probably make you the mayor or crown you king or something.

The compression test would most likely be 500 on it's own. PPI's are a general overview at best. Not all Ferrari mechanics spend the better part of their days on F-chat so if you have specific concerns on a model, make sure you ask them to check them out.

Good food for thought, I figured the Ferrari ppi would be as stringent as Porsche but good to know

What’s the shop doing the ppi? Did the dealer recommend it or did you find it? I learned an expensive lesson doing a ppi with the shop the dealer recommended me....in Florida...and dealer I got mine from has a stradale right now....

I'd rather not post their name. This wasn't meant to be a "this shop is terrible". More a "What should you expect when a PPI is done". I really thought there was a standard across the board, and I'm a mechanic by trade. Hopefully this helps someone else in the future so they are aware that there isnt said standard.

I will say the car is a private sale and the shop was recommended by the current owner. I dont think he had bad intentions either. As others have said, the standard needs to specified ahead of time when it comes to PPIs. Something I wasnt aware of.

Same here across the pond. Car was at a completely separate, supposedly very respected indie having a part repaired so I asked them to do the ppi whilst it was there. Their incompetence cost me a few £k.

There should have been no relationship between the two companies, but after my experience I have my doubts.

Seems the more the money the more the cowboys.

Confirm with them what the ppi covers, and doesn’t cover. Pay them direct, ie you have a contract with them, not the company you are buying from. For the money I would expect a written report with pics.
