This thread is a breeding ground for an orgy of lawyer jokes... i think even the lawyers will come in here and tell some jokes...

In any case, i wouldn't even know what to tell you to look for in a personal injury attorney... That's sorta like saying, what do you look for in a cashier at the grocery store...? How do i know she's accurate at counting change...? How do i she'll ring me up in a timely fashion...? Will she bag, too or do i have to do that...? You can't tell any of these things by looking at her - you have to meet with them; speak to them, etcetera; only then can you begin to make assesments...

If you had a profile, I could help. My dad's a personal injury lawyer. If I knew where you lived we could see...

A lot of lawyers aren't as bad as the jokes say, they aren't crooks etc. You got cut a bad deal though, that really sucks. We're having a big problem with my mom's estate lawyer, he's still charging us for working on the estate and no progress at all and it's been 3 years. :(

Here in NJ, a certification is granted to the more experienced, respected
trial lawyers, (ie Certified Civil Trial Attorney.). This means they have tried
a certain number of cases to verdict, have been personally recommended by judges, etc.

Depends on the size of the claim. For small ones, one of the factories is probably your best bet. For the larger type of cases, you need to talk to those in the business, in the area where the matter would be tried.

If I weren't in the field, had a major claim, I would contact the local Bar Association, and get a referral to a lawyer in that speciality. This isn't going to be your guy, though. I'd pay him for an interview, and get a recommendation from him for the person whose getting the best results in that area. If he refuses to provide such names, get another referral, and ask them. Badges are easy to get, and you really don't know if that 5m verdict was a loss or a win. If they'd been offered 10m, and refused, I'd consider that a loss. there are a lot of variables, and they only person who can direct you properly is someone in that field, whose not going to get the case, just make a referral.

It's a shame about not getting sufficient funds. However, you may have a claim against the lawyer who sold the case for not enough money.

Him an his ex partner rep'ed a profesional plaintiff who sued me.
They coached him how to lie those dirtbags!
We went to court and creamed them.
They settle 99.9% before it gets to court.
In the courtroom they performed terribly, it was hilarious!
As much as i dreaded it, by the time we went to court i enjoyed myself watching these dirtbags get thier azz handed to them.

I would second the recommendation that you look for an attorney who is board certified in personal injury trial law. Be careful as some attorneys may advertise in the personal injury ads and state that they are board certified, when they may indeed be board certified, but board certified in criminal law or some other unrelated specialty. You may also want to do a search in the find a lawyer section of the American Trial Lawyer Association at http://www.atla.org/

When you set up your first appointment, see how much time you get to spend with the attorney as opposed to a legal assistant or other non-lawyer. If you don't get a lot of time with the lawyer at the start, you may not get a lot of time with them later.

I wish you all the best in what may well be a difficult time.
