My last two posts were 'whacked'....I'm thru with crcs. Everyone have a great weekend, don't forget your front plate!!!
Guys - Continuing to quote crcs and addressing his comments is not fair to him, when he's constrained in his response, hence the deletions. No "last words" to his comments. The OP's post is about "What treatment do you get when pulled over by the Police"? Thanks.
Got stopped in the 360 a number of years age. Was at dinner with friends and others. At dinner with us was an elderly woman who was mother of one of the guys. We all decided to go to one home for some talk and cocktails. "Mama" went with me as she had never been in a Ferrari. I took it real easy at first-not wanting to upset grandma. Two miles in she turned to me and said "I thought these cars went fast." So I got on it and blasted down some side roads at highly ballistic speeds. Past a cop going the other way. Slowed done but he never showed up. Turned onto main road-went done 1/2 mile when I saw the flashing lights and the police car hunting me down. Pulled over, shut down and waited for officer. He approached car with flashlight (night) and stopped and shone light in engine compartment for a while. he then approached me and said "Car is nothing but engine, huh?" Asked for paperwork, said it had taken him all this time to catch me, I must have been doing 100 mph plus. I just listened and said nothing. But grandma decided enough was enough and started to lambast the officer, calling him every nasty word you can imagine. I finally got her to settle down and the told the officer that my insurance card was in the front luggage compartment, in my wallet, in my back pack. He said no issues-get out of car and get it. So he and I headed to front of car, I apologized for grandma, got my paperwork and he said-no issues-no ticket-but please-how fast were you really going-off the record. So I said 100-120 (actually hit 145 once) Got his name and card so next day went to police station with car, found out when he got off of work-came back then, met him and said that as he was now off work-would he like to take my car for a ride?? He jumped at chance, went to dispatcher and said to radio all police cars on the roads to ignore a Silver Ferrari that may be going over speed limit! WE got in car, I drove at first to show him operation, swapped after 2 miles or so and he drove car for an hour all over town-stopping every police car he saw to show them "his" new ride. Got back to station and he said that if I ever got stopped in that town or next, to show cops his business card and to have then call him direct or radio the station and he would, as he put it "make things good with the other cop. Haven't had a ticket since--sopped enough times to lose license though... Lesson--Be nice to police and take that extra step and give them a drive/ride in the car. Worked for me!
Dude...this story is so wrong on so many fronts. Drinking cocktails, 145mph, passenger yelling at cop, later taking cop out for a high speed illegal ride, subsequent driving that "should have resulted in lost license numerous times" but no tickets. I'm speechless.
On a serious note, I have been let off numerous times for exceeding the speed limit(I've never tried to talk myself out of a ticket)....but I NEVER speed through playground & school zones and in residential areas. I do open it up occasionally on freeways and open roads where I have long distance vision and it is wide open......I am not saying this is right, just what I have done in the past. As I am getting older, I am actually getting wiser and do not exceed the speed as in my younger years....
But the slickest front plate mounting scheme I've ever seen was a set of rare earth magnets glued to the inside of the bumper cover. The poster (on the forum of folks with my daily driver) applied tape to the back of his plate such that it wouldn't scratch the paint on the bumper and stuck it on with the magnets. When he showed the car or went out of state, he'd remove the plate.
That is a REALLY good idea, one that I'm surprised I've never heard of before. Depending what state I end up living in after I leave Japan next year, I'll have to do that to my 430 when I pick her up.
Never got stopped in any F-car, and considering I drove on my dealer plate for 5 years, that "was" a surprise. The many Porsches I drove on the other hand..........heh. The most memorable event.......driving thru the Mount Royal neighborhood here in Calgary.......putzing along at 50 KMH in a 996 Turbo on a 50 KMH limit residentially zoned street........get pulled over by a marked cruiser that followed me for about 6-8 blocks. Guy wants to write me up for speeding........has no radar lock, says it was clocked (visual est off his speedo) so I ask him as I am legally parked on the side of the road, if I can use my cellular phone to make a quick call. He says "sure, and who are you calling BTW". I said a flat deck truck to take my car to the dealer where I can going to have a printout of the ECU generated immediately upon arrival, which will show the last 5 minutes of my vehicle operation in detail. Road speed, gear ratios, RPMS.....etc......etc......etc.....the infamous pre-accident black box (and warranty voiding) data we all know that can be drawn from today's vehicles. Told him I wasn't speeding and that I was going to provide witnesses as to the chain of custody of the vehicle from this point forward in addition to the printout as evidence against my being "illegally harrassed".....my exact wording. The guy was pissed but let me go with a warning.......and......I had not been speeding either.
Pulled over 3 times with the fun cars. One good, one very bad, one very funny... The good: I had just purchased my Lamo SV and was taking it down ot Hwy 90 which is a well known very entertaining road. I was cruising south down the highway on the way there with a friend with me. We are talking so much that I realize that I am going under the speed limit. I came upon a state trooper going north who tagged me with continuous radar. A mile or so later another trooper coming north tags me with instant on radar. Didnt think too much of it. Little bit later I see a little white speck in my mirror gaining on me very rapidly. I pull over and shut if off. He pulls up behind me and his friend stops a bit ahead of me. Trooper informs me he is stopping me for my window tinting. I had just bought the car and previous owner had 5% tint on it. He asks a lot of questions about the car. Asks me how fast I have had it, etc. Nice guy. Asks if they make front license plate holder for this car. I say I dont think so. He agrees. Tells me to take care of the tint. Asks me where I am going and assures me no else will bother you today. Enjoy your drive. I was so pleased to be informed of this that I promptly took off like a bat out of **** and passed his partner in the other car in 2nd gear, 6000RPM and a high rate of speed. Looked in my rear view mirror and saw a hand out the troopers car window with a big thumbs up. The bad: Was out for a drive with about 6 other cars. I was the lead. We turn on a stretch of road that I know is always heavily patrolled. It is starting to rain and this stretch of road is pretty boring so I keep my speed to just a couple over and set the cruise control. We are only going about 5 miles befor we turn onto a really good road where we will go for it. I turn onto said road and pull over on the shoulder to let everyone see the turn and gather up. I see a couple of cars behind me and then a trooper with light on. WTF? He gathers everones info. After 30 minutes he comes back to everyone. Get to me last. Tells me it is my luck day, here is my paperwork and a ticket for 95in a 60. I ask how is this my luck day. He informs me that he clocked one of the cars in my group going 125. Locked him in at 95. Told me that if he had locked him in at 125 we would all have gone to jail. (guy was just diagnosed with an advanced malignancy and I think was the last drive he ever went on. Trooper didnt care.) He had checked on the ticket that my speed was radar checked. I asked how fast I was going. He told me I have no idea. I went on my way thinking this is a farce and with his statement, should be a slam dunk dismissal. Handed it over to my lawyer, and he concurred. Well, county prosecutor here dont like speeders, so he is being much less than helpful. Time to call in some favors. I talked to one of my collegues whos wife is the assistant prosecutor. He says he will talk to his wife and get it fixed. Next day he calls me to let me know that his daughter just started her last year of high school and his wife retired for the year to spend time with their daughter. Another acquaintance is the previous county prosecutor. He says he cant do anything directly, but he is close with the other assistant prosecutor. He will give him a call and get it taken care of. Next day get a call and the other prosecutor just had a stroke and will be out for weeks. Now my lawyer is saying he is not sure there is anything anyone can do. After 4 months, he finally sits down with the Co. prosecutor and works out a deal for faulty equipment and $700 fine. Tells me its the only option they are putting on the table. Expensive drive . Very funny: Crescent Classic last year. We were is some sparsely populated county in the middle of nowhere AR. We had a leisurely lunch and many folks started back well before we did. We were in the Stradale and on the route back to Eureka Springs with about 5 cars. We are going down a road on the outskirts of town, but definitely out in the country. There are a few homes around so we are keeping it very sedate. I suddenly see a county sheriff car coming at me from around the bend. He slams on his brakes and blocks both lanes of traffic read block style. Radar on. Light a blazing. He aint happy. Oh no!!! We are in big trouble!!! Well, the sheriff pops out of his car like he was shot out of a cannon. I have windows down, car off, hands in clear view and my Eureka Springs police patch on the dash in clear view. Im thinking this isnt going to go well. Rehearsing my most sincere "yes, Sir." Well Mr Sheriff is really pissed. I mean really, really pissed. He is beat red and steam is coming out of his ears. This was like a scene out of Smokey and the Bandit. He was short, heavy, and a thick Arkansas accent. He launches into a rant that I swear was at least 15 minutes long. why the H#@@ do yall got to drive so G** D**** fast. I dont understand it. Why cant yall slow down. I know you werent going fast cause I got you on radar! I have been getting phone calls complaining about ya'll. I am tired of getting calls. I dont want any more phone calls. You are in charge of these cars. I dont want any more speeding cause I dont want no more call. Call ahead and tell the rest of them to slow down. I dont want any more call... Again this went on for over 15 minutes. At first I was terrified, but then I realized he was venting and then it was hard not to laugh. He then sent us on our way. We went 5 under until we hit the Co. line Then we hit it!
About a year ago I got caught with my gt4 going 73 in a 55. I explained to him that I don't speed because I figured I may be a target for tickets. The county deputy said in many older cars the speedo could be quite a bit off and I should get it checked. So he let me off with a warning. It was a good day.
You're my HERO! lol Wish I had a nice enough car to try that with an officer but they just don't seem to be to impressed by a blue 05 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS (4 cylinder).
I was late for a meeting heading north of Toronto on Hwy 11. I was going at it pretty hard, passing everyone at high speed. After about 20 minutes of "spirited" driving, I notice a cop pulled over way ahead of me. Hummm...I slow down and join in the right hand lane traffic following a mini van at the posted speed of 100KM/60MPH. I pass the cop, doing the speed limit with all the other cars in the right hand lane. I stay in the right hand lane for about another 3 minutes just to be sure all is well and good. When I'm about to pull out and resume my spirited driving, I notice 4 police cars all with flashing lights coming quickly up the passing lane. They box me in...just like in the movies and the one cop waves his hand jesturing me to pull on the shoulder. I do. He comes up and says, "What's the emergency?". Hummm....I know I've been driving for the last 5 minutes in the right hand lane at regular speed, they don't have me on any radar, OK...I'll chance a bit of a fib. "There is no emergency, officer." Well....he begins to tell me there are 3 separate cell phone reports by other drivers I've passed at high speed, who thought there was a crazy driver on the roads. My car matches their description excactly. He tells me he doesn't have me on any radar, but tells me I have two choices. The first choice is to accept a speeding ticket of 6 KM over the speed limit. About $40 and no points. "What's the other choice officer?". "If you don't accept the ticket, we'll impound your car, strip you of your license for 3 months and call back the other drivers who reported this and get their statements, and charge you for reckless driving." Thanks officer, I'll take the 6km over the speed ticket, thank you! The morel of the story...SLOW DOWN WHEN PASSING...these words only make sense when you've heard the whole story.
Circumstance: Coming to work one morning (not an F-car) about 7 AM. Going thru the normal way to the garage via a primary entrance at this time was longer because of the sheer volume of people. A secondary entrance at a different street was possible only by making an illegal left turn from a busy street. Only staff with parking cards can access that entrance. Anyway his cruiser was there because of traffic but purposely blocking the entrance since he sensed my intention. I made the turn anyway squeezing behind his cruiser and into the entry way. On goes the lights as he pulled into the outgoing part of the driveway. I get a tongue lashing and a lecture about how dangerous It was. He makes me get out of my vehicle and points out the 4 no left turn signs on that street. Tells me next time to go around the block and approach the entrance from the same side of the street and not cross the oncoming traffic. No ticket, not even a warning. Since then, haven't taken that illegal left turn to save a few minutes. May not be lucky the next time ( ticket or with other traffic ) although I see others doing it. My insurance is already astronomical.
I have been pulled over for over 180 mph in the F40. It was 1am and no one was on the road. The police were very nice to me. I have never done that again.
I have to admit that I am not a big fan of the cops, since my formative years were spent being harassed by the little town cops in NJ. Having said that, I learned early on that a good attitude goes a long way. I was on one of my favorite stretches of road..... long downhill, leading to a sweeping right hander, then up a long hill. The road was dead empty. The CS is singing. What would you do? Exactly, so would I!! As I am about to apex the right, I catch the nose of the cop car hiding in the bushes. I nail the carbon ceramics, and he fires his radar. I trundle past as innocently as a 110db CS can be. I head up the hill and he hasn't pulled out. It crosses my mind to just nail it and get out of there, but I figured I didn't want to make the evening news. I head around a couple of corners and sure here comes Phoenix's finest..... Just doin' his job. He stops me and comes over to the car, and asks, "Do you know why I stopped you"? I responded, "You were bored and wanted to talk cars", and gave him a big smile. He responded, "License! Registration! Insurance card"! I figure I'm dead. After making sure I wasn't wanted for ax murdering, he came back to the car and says, "Isn't this the one that is kind of like a race car"? We talked cars for 15 minutes or so, said that my line through the corner looked good, and sent me on my way. He obviously never worked for a small NJ town.
I would love to agree with that, except every jeuvenile delinquent and wanna be criminal I went to HS with........ are now cops in little NJ towns, tailgating kids and harassing the public. All in the name of "To Serve and Protect". One of the countless reasons I moved away from that part of the world. I appreciate what a thankless, dangerous and frankly underpaid job, being a cop can be, but it doesn't change the way those Jersey cops affected me, as well as countless others. Having said all that I still say that having a decent attitude when one gets stopped goes a long way. As bad as some laws are, and enforcement is basically a revenue enhancer, it is the law, and we got busted. The cop holds the cards. Turning it into a negative experience will give everyone a bad day, and not have the potential of ending well. Which for us is NOT getting a ticket and maybe making a friend out of stranger whom I may encounter again at some point. Having a bad attitude will probably ALWAYS end with a ticket or worse.
Speaking of getting pulled over... Happened this morning on one of my favorite mountain runs. I left the freeway and turned left onto the mountain road. From the opposite side of the bridge I saw CHP exiting the freeway from the other side. That's a known speed check area and I surmised that the officer would get back onto the freeway where I had come from. Well, just to be sure I gunned it after the first turn and took off (officer couldn't see that since he was about 100 yards behind). Hunted up the switchblade turns at a very spirited pace letting the engine howl. Speed limit is 30mph, very curvey. I am making very good time when I get caught behind a slow Buick and the guy is just not pulling over. Probably going 20mph and no room to pass. Well, after a few minutes following the slow poke the CHP cruiser shows up coming flying around the turns and parks himself right on my bumper. After five or six turns he flips his lights on and goes on the microphone telling me to pull over best chance I get. Finally an open area comes up and I pull into a driveway. He gets out, walks up asking me how fast I was going. I said that I focused on the road but perhaps slightly above 30... He says that he would have never caught up with me if it wasn't for the Buick slowing me down so much. Claimed that he was going at least 60 trying to catch me. License and registration is handed over and he disappears. Clearly, he never saw me speeding. Not on the off ramp and not when he finally caught up with me. Remember, this is CHP and we are now quite a ways up the mountain. He come back and I can see that he's only holding my papers and nothing yellow... Tells me about slowing down and he understands that I have a fun car but need to be more careful and slow down. No ticket. He gets in his car and goes back down the mountain. I start my car and continue my run up the mountain. If it wasn't for the Buick, he'd never have caught up with me and 2 miles further up was a major crossways where he would not known where to go anyway. Interesting encounter. I really wonder why he decided to go up the mountain. I wonder he he'd hoped to catch me "in the act". Oh well... I was very polite the entire time and he was a younger officer. Kai Is it 2012 yet?
When we were kids, high school age, we frequently went to New Milford, PA during summers. During this particular teencation we decide to cross into the NY border to buy some alcohol. At time we were below drinking age in PA but Legal in NY. As we were crossing back to PA, we were stopped by a local LEO. He noticed the rectangular outline of the paper bag and asked what was in there. " Beer officer ". He made us open every single can and dump it roadside. After that he sent us on our way. No long lecture blowing sunshine up our bu.t. Won't see that kind nowadays.
