He was always incredibly fit, after most races it looked like he wasn't even breaking a sweat, he was completely calm, just like he went for a walk in a very breezy park. Knowing what F1 cars can do to a person, I'm just wondering how exactly did he get in that kind of shape? What kind of workouts, how often, when and where, etc. Maybe I could try to copy them and see what happens.

Hire a personal trainer that travels with you everywhere for starters. start jogging 5 miles every day, lift weights daily, etc.

When I met him last year, he was just one 5'7" muscle. Even though I just got done jogging 15 minutes earlier, and was down to 160 lbs (I'm 5"11"), I suddenly felt fat. Michael Schumacher was in better shape than any of the NFL or NBA players I had met. He was a true athelete. It would take an incredible amount of dedication and time to be in his condition.

And he smoked cigars! Go figure.

I wonder how long he is going to stay fit now. I bet he is up at least 10 lbs one year out. Not that ten lbs would make a difference on him anyway.

well, i think a true sportsperson will always stay fit, and thats one thing in their mind. but MS went thru a lot in those years in F1.

nice to relax a lil. who knows, maybe he's already coaching his son or something.

I watched this documentary that said he trained anywhere from 4-6 hours a day. He spent 2-3hrs cycling, and then hit the gym for high repetition weight training for endurance. There are fitness models and bodybuilders that spend less time training and look way more ripped, but that wasn't Michael's purpose for training. Michael needed endurance first and foremost, so while alot of people may appear to be in better shape, due to more muscle mass and cuts etc., his stamina was at a very high level.

I wonder how it compares to say KR's exercise regime? That might say a lot.

About a year ago or more there was an exercise machine available on the Ferrari Owner's Site - suppose to be like MS used - red in color, very fancy looking but nose-bleed price as I recall - I'm thinking about 10,000 € or more - tad bit more than the ones on tv. Cool looking piece of equipment. (That price = about 25 years at Curves.)

There is a nice description of the training rig that Schumi built at Fiorano in the June issue of Car. It was a weight machine built like an F1 car cockpit with weights attached to his head and to the streering wheel to simulate load. The author describe how Schumi built the rig and spent hours wagging his head and truing the wheel to develop hi s forearms and neck muscles.

    Now THAT is dedication.

Michaels Workout programs and dedication are almost as much of a Marranelo legend as his Driving! Not long after he arrived at Ferrari one of the rooms in a Fiorano buliding was converted into a personal gym for him so he could Work out in between his testing schedules.
I'am not sure anyone really knows to what extent he went to with his training, Michael never let on much, as it would allow his competitors to emulate his preparation, but 6 to 8 hours a day has be mentioned on many occasions. It's also known that he did alot off "cross" trainning, Kickboxing, rock climbing, horse riding, Karting, Soccer, Cycling, Skiing, Tennis etc....
