Thanks a lot man. Any buying tips for when the time comes?
first car: 1979 Dodge Diplomat (chicks loved it...NOT) Now : Porsche 944 turbo Next car ; Ferrari 348 (hopefully)
1988 MB 190E 2.3; bought it Jan '01 at 145k mi. for $3400. Friend reversed into a truck with it in late 02, sold it spring '03 at 170k mi for $3200. It was bulletproof, and instrumental in me meeting my wife. I put a more detailed version of the story on the "Story of your first car" thread here: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3850. This pic is the actual car, taken for the flyer I made to sell it. Now I drive an '04 WRX.
...unless you had the same first car as I did - a 1991 Mercury Topaz. It was a POS that I had a love/hate relationship with for 2 years. I now have a 99 Camry and a 78 Alfa Romeo Spider that I have yet to drive, as the mechanic has had it since July.
So true. Actually that first Camaro started a run of them. I think now I've had 13 different Camaros, all first generations from 67 to 69. Here is the current one.
K5mcl, these cars are bulletproof, very reliable. My only advice is to find a relativley low-mileage car, if possible. If the car youre looking at was maintained by the owner and not a shop, all the better as these cars are SO easy to fix if anything breaks. The only problems Ive had (really not problems, just results of lots of driving) is the A/C compressor broke once, and the parking brake needs an occaisional adjustment. The A/C took a shop to fix, but the parking brake was easy: just crawl under the car and tighten ONE bolt. This needs to be done about every 2 years. So if its a 97 your looking for there are really no big warnings that pop into my head at this time, these cars are indestructable. Just dont buy a beater BTW the one other problem that i just thought of is that the switches for the side windows car fail and damage the motors if you turn off the car while powering them either up or down. Dont do that, the motors can be expensive to replace. Good luck! SMS your car rocks!
First vehicle was a '69 Chevy Van paid $300 in 1979. Sold it about 4 years later for $350. What an investment!! lol...
The Camaro I posted on page 2 of this thread was the first one bought on my own with paper route $, but if I can count our Father/Son project, it was Dec. 1974. I just turned 14 and Dad bought this 59 Vette for $1800. I spent just about every waking moment tearing down and rebuilding this car. Mom and Dad always knew where I was, and I was too broke to get in trouble all thru school because I was always buying parts for the two cars! Following photos are: The 67 Camaro during engine rebuild and first home done black paint job. I was 15 and getting ready for my license. The 59, photo from 1978. The 59, photo from 1999. I still have it today, never to be sold. If you guys have a chance to nurture an automotive passion with your kids in the form of a joint project, DO IT NOW!
Big confession (looks over shoulder to see if anyone else is listening) 4 door Racing Brown Plymouth Horizon 2.2 Shush don't tell anyone Looked something like this Image Unavailable, Please Login
First car was an AMC Concord DL. The BIGGEST POS car i ever had. It would chew through tranny's every 2 years for no apparent reason. Must have weighed in at 3 tons, perhaps 10. Felt like driving a wet sponge. The thing was a POS POS POS POS!!!!! i DID NOT... Enjoy the Drive, Steven R. Rochlin
My first one was a 68 camaro then i traded it for a 70 cuda. I had lots of fun in high school with those.........
First car was a 1986 Chyrsler Laser Turbo (very bad car for a 16 year old). After owning it a year, I got a letter from the DMV telling me I was one of the worst 3% of drivers in California. Current Cars are a 2001 Jeep Wrangler and a 1987 328 GTS. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
