For those of us who were Tifosi when the 288 GTO was announced and hit your local concours, what was the reaction?

Was it immediately minted as aristocracy?

Was the Gruppe B homologation immediately understood?

Was it mistaken for a glorified 308?

Did you lament it wearing the GTO badge?

    Pray tell!

I was 4. But I still remember one passing my dad and I in his 512bbi on our way to a ferrari event. It was brand new. And it was amazing. Turns out it was Uderzo driving.

I loved the looks. I was 17 at the time. We (My Dad) actually had one. I just didn't understand why it wasn't any faster than the Testarossa or our Boxer. that confused me at the time. This (Gruppe B homologation) meant ZERO to me. Didn't know anything about it.

I was in high school, in a rural area. It was just a picture on the cover of a magazine. I thought it was cool looking and 201 MPH top speed was pure science fiction. But as a car, it (as well as any other Ferrari) were so completely out of my league that it just didn't count.

There were no local concours in my area. I didn't even get to see a Ferrari up close for another 17 years.

I thought it looked just like Magnum PI's car, I was 14, but even better, for some reason. Back then we got our information from magazines which came out monthly, and too a while to get the full story. I was fascinated to learn more, which I did, and that only increased my appreciation, and learned all the differences from the 308. I loved it and still do. It's a gorgeous car.

I was also around 14. It was the super version of the 308 and it had a Ferrari badge. I didn’t know then we should even question it. Ferrari, red, V8, four ‘fog’ lamps. Beautiful.

They got off to a very slow start. My dealer imported several. We had a client with an inside contact at Ferrari and bought his direct. When he went to pick it up they still had several dealers had not taken and he was offered all of them. I loved them from the beginning. Id still have one over anything else they ever made.
