today i decided to wear my old Lemania Chronograph. it´s from late 30ties/or very early 40ies, very small compared to my other chronographs and has an early 1-button chrono-movement.
Lemania does not manufacture watches since a very long time, but the lemania clock mechanism is very famous and was used in the Omega Speedmaster Professional, Breitling Cosmonaute and many other mechanical chronographs.

Hi Michael
I've seen photos of a couple of Lemanias with Prancing Horse logos on them. Do you think they could be genuine Ferrari watches? Have you seen or heard of Ferrari using Lemania for presentation watches? I'm always suspicious, as its not hard to take a watch apart and put a Prancing Horse decal on it.

i don´t think Lemania ever made a licenced ferrari-watch. but enzo himself ordered some unique pieces with the prancing horse, that he gave as present to friends. maybe there have been lemaina watches too, as they were very popular in the fifties.

Can you share the story behind this one?

 

I can tell you the story behind Jim's watch

It's an original watch worn and then given by Fangio to his #1 mechanic. It's a 1950s 'Vetta' manual watch - silver with a silver face, two subdials, and was worn by Fangio, and then later gifted to his friend and mechanic. It's inscribed at the back - "Para mi amigo, companero y mecanico "Jungo" Justo Perez este presente de todo corazon 10/8/58 Juan Manuel Fangio". The front is marked "Cuervo Y Sobrinos, Habana", which was and is still a famous store in Cuba specializing in high end watches and other ephemera. This was the year Fangio drove the Maserati 250F, having also raced for Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes and Lancia. As some of you may remember, he was in Cuba for a while after the political coup when he was taken 'hostage'.



As for LeMania, they did produce watches for Ferrari, though not 'officially'. One of the first official contracts was with Heuer in the late 70s - then Cartier in the 80s - Girard-Perregaux in the 90s - and Panerai today. HOWEVER, there were many companies producing small batches of watches for Ferrari - including LeMania, Longines, Vetta and more.
