    Hi guys.

My '87 328 was last servied a year ago so I guess its up for an 'Annual Service' (only covereed 3,000 miles in that time). My questions is, what standard work should I expect to be carried out at and Annual Service?

I'm guesing oil and filter change, renew brake fluid and generally give the car a once over.

    Thanks

    Paul

What is your total mileage, and when was the last major done?

Depends what else has been done in the last year or two. Other items that might be up for replacement/renewal would be gearbox oil, spark plugs & coolant to name but 3.

Brake fluid is normally fine for 2 years unless you work the the thing very hard/track it.

Worth checking all the CV joints/gaiters etc & also ccondition of your disks (rotors) & pads. An AC flush & recharge might be a good idea if it hasn't been done for 2 or 3 years.

Lastly, your car is 18 years old, its time to check the flexible brake hoses & all the fuel pipes if these havn't been looked at recently.

Because of the vast difference in miles driven per year and how hard those miles are on the car, it is difficult to give you a list.

Belts have a widely variable life depending on rpm, tension or the lack there of, perhaps just sitting for 10 months is a big stress on the belt??? Lord knows, the timing belt issue has been covered.

Front Wheel bearings need repacking, usualy at 30,000 miles or ??? years?

Perhaps in a minimal maintenance year one could, every 10 years or so renew the grease and boots on the axles.

One of the great difficulties, in my experience, is very low mileage cars with incomplete maintenance records.

I want to drive the car, but do not know how long it has been since the bearing have been packed, timing belts, valve adjustment, fuel filter, steering rack grease replacement.

Sorry, back to your question..annual maintenance. When I was a service manager, we were doing GM cars, Fiats and, Isuzus on a fairly generic schedule. This is perhaps a good place to start, that is with the factory recommendations, then temper them with hard usage, very low usage and perhaps climatic usage.

I and i believe most other owners are real believers in preventative maintenance; as one owner once said, ..even over-maintaining, :)

But you have to have someplace to start, so, I am open to suggestions from the vastly more experienced, to try to generate a flexible, but adequate and hopefully not too expensive set of recommendations.

    Help,
    chris

In short, there is no such thing as an annual service. it's up to the mechanic to do a report on what your car needs. It helps if he knows it's history of course.

    Basically, though....

Annual service (assuming very little mileage has been done in 12 months and cars mileage does not correspond with a scheduled service interval) is something like...

Engine oil and filter every year. Check air filter, check tune and adjust if nec'. Check tyres condition and pressure. Check auxilary belts. Check Wipers washers and lights. All other fluids top up as nec. Lubricate locks and hinges. lube horn compressor. Check gearbox oil level.

    Additionally...

Replace Gearbox oil every 2 years.
Replace Brake fluid every 2 years.
    Replace coolant every 2 years.

I've just checked my service history and in Feb 04, 12,500 miles ago it had a 'major' covering all belts, valve clearance, engine and gearbox oil. Since then it has had coolant change (May 04) and cambelt/camseals (Oct 04, 3,000 miles ago).

I think its OK to hold off on the valve clearances, gearbox oil, coolant change until next years annual service, which will be about 2.5 years and 16,000 miles since the last Major.

Obviously I'll bring forward any work if my mechanic spots a potential problem.

For an annual service, I would suggest changing coolant, engine and trans oil, and brake fluid. Don't forget, that while your Ferrari is sitting in the garage, while it's raining in the winter, the brake fluid is absorbing the moisture in the humid air in your garage. Also, a general belt and hose check just to be safe.
