First let me say that this didn’t happen on any Ferrari but on a Lamborghini Diablo instead. But I post it here cause a lot of our cars have these parts. I was driving car on highway when I smelt oil burning and then a big poof of smoke. Oil pressure dropped to zero so not knowing what it was I coasted engine off. (I pray no engine failure for the little that I did drive without knowing). Oil was everywhere. I had car flatbedded home and this is what I found. What would possibly cause this? This is flex hose #2 in parts diagram

Hose not properly swaged into the coupling.
Hose met something moving rapidly (like: rock) that stressed the insufficiently swaged coupling.

Poor-quality oil hoses were common on the Maranellos.

This is a very typical failure on the Diablo. These hoses connect the oil cooler to the engine. They constantly flex with engine movement, and get seriously cooked with radiant heat from the exhaust. Very poor design.

You are lucky the car didn't go up in flames.

It seems part is discontinued. Do you think I can have this hose fabricated?

Have a race shop fabricate a new one. It will be much better than factory.

Very common, often accompanied by flames! Sometimes engine rebuild. I make my own lines and this is a recommended maintenance item from me.
Seeing similar but not so serious risks on some Fcars too, typically the 355 hoses

I do have some NOS oil lines here for Diablos

Any recalls or TSBs associated with these inferior items?

    Ha!
If you google there is an insane number of instances of fire and sometimes accidents where the LR goes up in flames or the LR tire is suddenly doused in hot oil, I certainly suspect the cause is the failure of a hose, but......

I just had a conversation with one of my 355 clients about this. I told him that at the next engine-out he might want to budget for some new hoses. They're not getting any younger, or cheaper.

Good point. Especially if the originals are still in there.

Every other engineout, I have the shop replace anything that is rubber in the engine bay.

I put Dave Helms coolant hoses on his car a few years ago. What a struggle that was getting them to stop leaking. They are okay now. It's the braided hoses connecting the oil tank that are becoming a problem.

I cant speak about the Diablo hose ends, but sure they similar design to oil hose ends used on Ferrari's.

Pic attached -- standard Testarossa oil hose end on the left, no place for ferrule to lock into up top and very little "teeth" to grip hose once ferrule is attached. Thin wall, no internal wire hose and bad design- fire looking to happen.

End on right is installed on our cars, and what we install on customers Testarossa's. Forged one piece ends with better "teeth" and correct ferrule to lock hose in place. Thicker wall quality one wire hose, and one piece ends- never worry again.

Most DIY here opt to have "discount hydraulic hose" take their original hose ends and have tails welded to them and some sort of new ferrule. Cheapest seems to be the norm. Each shop is different, but you usually get what you pay for.

    Just my 2 cents.
