If I were to buy a 2007 911 would a Turbo or an S hold their values better? Assume both cars have around 8,000 miles and are in great shape. I would drive the cars about 10,000 miles per year for a couple of years and then sell. The Turbo costs more but I was thinking that the depreciation would be slower than a non-turbo.

    Thanks!! Matt

The depreciation would be much less, with the 2002-2003 996 GT2.

If you buy a 20K mile GT2, and put 20K miles on it in two years, the depreciation will not be all that bad, when it is compared to other similar cars.

The GT2, has some type of cult following, amongst the P crowd. The collector grade 996 GT2 cars, have not dropped in price all that much, in relation to other modern exotics. Simple formula: no frills, a focused powerful car, and low production #'s.

I say they both drop like rocks and the Turbo more... Neither are low production, so you kind of just have to look at them as regular cars. The last of the air cooled cars are the "classic" 911 but as the base for that car ages they too will finally begin to drop. One of the other reasons they hold value better is compared to the cars being built today there are far fewer of them. Porsche and the economy in general were having real problems then and so they just were not making the numbers of 911's that they are today. Those early 90's Turbos were particularly low production cars... As were the 928 GTS's from '93 - '95 for the US... 997's, even the Turbos...WAY TO MANY OF THEM to look at as anything other than a commodity to be used up...

    YMMV.

I am not a big fan of the 996, plus I was thinking about a 2007 for the warranty.

That is what I was thinking, and I really don't mind taking the loss. I was just trying to figure out which one I would lose less on. If I could buy a turbo for $90k and sell it later for $70k, then that would better than paying $70k for an "S" and selling it later for $40k. I was thinking the turbo would drop in value less b/c there are not as many, yes there are a lot, just not as many as the non-turbos.

But what do I know I am not a Porsche expert, just a fan!

Great car and its fun to drive. I plan to keep mine two years and sell it as well. Purchased it for 66,900.00, 70k out the door (Tax / License).
Plan to sell it for 60 and change next year.

They are going to devalue the same in percent,
but the turbo cost more so there will be more dollars lost but the same percent.

    Yea, what Mojo said...

I would say if you can swing the Turbo though, by all means get that one. You just can't beat the 996/997 Turbo cars! They are simply amazing! They are the only Porsche I would take over any of my 928's... The 996 would be the minimum step up over a 928 GTS...I own two GTS's and have driven (for extended periods) 996TT's (no 997's yet) and there are times and places for each of those cars, but a regular 996 would not be a fair replacement for my GTS's, the Turbo would be...

I think the new 997 with the PDK even in non-turbo form is pretty spectacular so that is really starting to be something to think about...

Good luck, you really can't go wrong with any 997 or 996TT purchase as long as the car checks out...

Once the turbo bottoms out in value, the S will continue to spiral down. There only going to have about a million 997 S built by the time production ends. I think the 996 and most likely the 997 will suffer from 928 and 944 itis. These cars will be so cheap and such a great value, that many will buy them and not be able to afford to maintain them. Most are not going to pay 100 an hour to repair a $12-15k car. Just wait, decent 996 will soon be under $20k, it will be the track car buy of the century.
The turbos will bottom out low, but the NA cars will fall way lower. The motor in a 996tt is worth more than the auction values of early 996s, no joke!
Good luck, just buy with your heart, because both of these cars are going to be worth way less after purchase in this market.

    Matt,

It looks great! Enjoy it! I love the 997's but in the long run I want a TT...if I wait long enough I can probably even afford to make that a 997TT! LOL!

I also agree with Justin that in the long run (and what we are currently seeing with early 996's and Boxsters) is the 928/944 itis where someone gets one because it is cheap and then can't afford to keep it up... Will that happen with 997's too? Who knows. But if it does it will be quite some time in the future. They sure are great cars! Best 911 EVER!

In this poor economy whatever car is cheaper would be the one to buy and it would depreciate less. If you had to get rid of it within the next couple of years, you'll take less of a hit on the cheaper one as people will look for cheaper toys.
