What would you pay?

  1. A little more than stock

  2. No Difference

  3. It would be worth less than stock

Alright, lets say you plan on doing your own major. You have the motor out, and now you want to beautify it. What do you think of the following ideas:

    1) Replace rubber/cloth hose with braided steel/etc type hose. This can be gotten in silver/blk/gold/etc.

    2) Powder coat some of the ancillary pieces: brakets, washers, retainers/airbox/pulleys/etc

    3) Polish some parts

    4) Add some different colored vacumn lines

    5) Paint the block

    etc.

As a disclaimer, my major's not due for a couple of years, but I was throwing around some idea's. Now I know there are a lot of purists, who would be insulted if I so much as changed one hose clamp.

But, why not make the TR motor into a cosmetic show piece? I don't want to "ghetto" the car, but on the other hand I can't resist the urge to "improve" it.

This is also going on with the porsche community lately. Used to be that if your Speedster wasn't an exact restoration, no one would buy it. Now purple/modded ones are selling strongly.

Looks at American Muscle cars. Years ago it HAD to numbers match. Now, folks want a new car in an old shell...

So, would you pay a little more for a spiffed up engine? (a couple or several grand) less? Or the same?

It's a Ferrari...I am more intrigued with OE parts than anything from the aftermarket. Upgrade the exhaust to a Tubi, and call it perfect.

Ditto. I think the TR engine was a work of art when it left the factory.

You know, you guys are all to smart for your own good sometimes. Some of the very ones who say it makes no difference are the same exact people who would want to knock off big dollars for the less than perfect car or the DIY maintained one with no Fo_ reciepts.

But also, your question makes assumptions that are not realistic. The numbers maching muscle cars are still pulling top dollar way over any clones. Same with P cars or anything else. The most original and complete 100 point car is always going to pull top dollar.

Myself, the older I get the more of a preservationist I become. Yet the motorhead inside of me is always screaming. When circa 1970 Chargers, SuperBees, Challengers, or Mustangs were a dime a dozen, and when I and my friends had cars like that, they were always jacked up and had bigger wheels and tires on them. They had headers and cams and Mr.Gasket aircleaners and valve covers and Eldebrock or Wieand or Isky Intakes. They had ladder bars or traction bars, chrome gear covers, differential gear sets from Zoom. Big Sun tachs on the steering column. To see these same cars today with skinny little tires and silly hubcaps and all these stock looking engine compartments makes the cars look alien. Nobody drove them that way, so if your trying to live with a retro car in a retro world then they probably should have those same goodies on them. If I ever owned another thats how I would want it. But it would never be worth as much.

My feeling is do anything you like as long as its easily reversible back to stock. And keep all the original parts to hand over to the next owner. I would never paint the motor or anything like that, it would look to "wrong". But I do have drilled rotors and Aeroquip hose, only because I have it and I can take it off and its better than stock. Costs more, buts its worth less on the car than off?
