I'm closer to this very scenario than I'd like to divulge. So I too am very curious what people would do. I'm sure there will be the ones.......I'd buy this, this, this..........but in reality, if 100k was A LOT to you, you probably wouldn't blow it on frivolous things. It's too much money to just blow, but not enough money to really "change your life". Also, I can't find comfort in most any investments right now. My 401K is tanking, and my mutual funds are stagnant.
I'd just quickly knock off a chunk of mortgage. Not too exciting. On second thought if someone just handed it to me I'd donate a chunk of it too.
I've lived below my means my whole life...........so I'd prob. spend it. I've been thinking about a sailboat lately. .....sailing away......
It's not what I would do myself, but the best advice I can give to some here is if you're going to spend it, spend it on something you won't lose money on, and can be liquidated in the future. So take half and buy a 308 or 328 which isn't going to lose value, and maybe save the rest. That way in effect you're keeping it all, but having a dream come true as well. Make sense? Wes
The notion of somebody handing out $100 is extremely rare, but if it happened.. 1) Am I going to get this amount TAX FREE??? If not, convert it to me in bullion. I had better not get a 1099 for it, because now the question becomes: "What if somebody gave you $49,000 ?" Unless your original question means, "what if somebody gave you $210,000" thus, leaving you with around $100K 2) Diversify the the amount; invest a portion, make that money work for me! Endulge in a smaller portion. Would like to crash at San Diego for a while.
I would spend it if its free money I am to much of a peeny pincher as it is. there is a 360 for 107k in auto trader, i would talk them down. the only problem is the taxes i would have to pay.
That's easy for me. I would buy a 308 or a 328 and I would invest the rest. Edit: I know someone who's boss dies and left the employee $500,000 They bought a 45 foot RV that cost about $240,000
WOW, that seems to me like a fantastic deal on a 360 already! I don't think there would be any taxes as it's a (theoretical) gift of after tax money. At least in Canada a gift from one person to another is tax free, or else look out next Christmas! Wes
It's not that much, but I'd put turbos on the Baron (50k) get the interior done (23k) and give the wife the balance. I'm probably going to get the Baron's interior done this year anyway, so that would be money saved. Don't know about the turbos, will need some extra cash for that, but the 430 comes first, looks like I'll be getting a 6 speed coup in Feb, first of the 06 coupes, Green/tan for color combo. Art
LOL, I have to agree with you Art, in California, 100K doesn't get you a whole lot. But it's a start.
I'd eat it. Those chocolate bars are good!! That's what I thought this thread was going to be about. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0623051grand1.html I would probably be boring and pay off the mortgage.
