For A living I mean. What was your focus early on, what in college, after you gained some experience, & what now? What would you like to have tried?

For me it’s Medicine. I went to college for it but bailed out when the best in my class was turned down. That was my 1st choice for a career. My talent took over. You?

    Karen,

All I ever wanted to do was fly. I went to college but decided for the first year and a half that drinking cheap bear was the way to go! I pulled my head out and refocused; much easier to do sober. End result: I fly for a living. No regrets. Still, I would love to race (SCCA or the like) as a hobby but just don't have the bucks and/or time to do it. Good thread. Dane

I just want to do something involving Ferraris and/or exotic cars.

If I can be around those everyday, or a majority of the week, I will be happy with my job.

I will get into auto restorations for a business and living once I retire, can't afford that yet, but I am on a "plan" to retire from computers in my mid-50's and
play with cars...not a car repair shop but restorations, what I do for a hobby now but get paid for it. If it fails, well I am retired, if not, I can happily work until death.

My first career interest was medicine but a very serious illness in my early 20's took 3 years away. Architecture was a shorter path to being on my own and really where I had the preponderance of talent -- success came easily in one sense but I also worked very, very hard in school and long afterwards.

I did courses in fine arts all the way along and took drawing seriously -- when I was in my late 20's I had the opportunity offered for a four-year course of study under a Classically trained master portraitist in Florence but the 15 grand or more I would have needed to finance that venture might as well have been 15 mil the time.

I had a good career as an architect but am glad to be out now. After hearing over the years about all the crap doctors have had to put up with I have no regrets about not being able to go down that road. The fine arts study opportunity in Italy was one of those romantic might-have-beens that's fun to speculate about.

Now -- I'm just finishing the last bits on the newly remodeled house we moved into last September, messing around with my Ferrari, spending way too much time on Fchat and other boards, reading, building model cars and playing computer games, along with my ongoing and happy relationship with my wife and keeping up with friends and relatives. I've got somewhat of a travel bug but my wife's health is not up to that now. It can wait.

As far as something serious, I'm helping a much younger friend develop his antiquarian book business. We're looking towards his opening a small specialty bookshop with me providing some assistance with the financial and design aspects when his online business has evolved into an established presence and steady moneymaker. Maybe I'll work for him part time then and be in charge of the automotive and architectural areas. I just don't have it in me anymore to go for it big like in getting another degree or doing something ultra-daring and entrepreneurial. Just doing the things I enjoy and being there for others feels right to me now.

I like doing what I do now, I just wish I got an earlier start. I spent my early years crawling around in the bilges of boats trying to drain the oil out of greasy diesel engines for less than $20k a year. Went to college when I was 27 because I decided I wanted to be the guy that owned the boat instead.

When I was 27 the most I'd ever paid for a car in my life was $500. When I was 37 I bought a Ferrari.
