Found myself in a bit of a dilemma.

Quite a while back, roughly 12 years ago I bought a "project" 930 Turbo look Cab. Now at this point in my life I felt that this would be the ultimate car for me. While I had always wanted a Ferrari, it seamed unrealistic to think I could ever own one. I decided that the 930, which was a close second favorite, was the way to go. Having no available credit to outright buy one, I decided I would pay as I go and build one. Boy did I ever pay! By the time it was complete, I had spent more on a clone than I could have bought a real 930 for. And to top it off, the car has some quirks that still need debugging. :(

The problem is this, I never use the car anymore at all. Yes it's paid for and cost little to keep, but it just seems pointless anymore. In our short summer season in northern Minnesota, when there are nice days I find myself driving mostly the 360 and then the Pantera. I put less than 50 miles on the Porsche this year. At this point your thinking why not just sell it? Well, I don't see it bringing much more than $10,000. I am just too stubborn to sell at that price. Over the years I have poured somewhere around $40k in this car. I actually think I might do better parting the car out. But every time I try I end up backing out as I have so much time and money in it. It seems I can't bring myself to do it.

Here is a quick break down of the car:

    1972 911T Chassis
    1977 930 3.0 Motor
Air to air intercooler, K-27 Quickspool turbo from Imagine Auto, GHL Stainless Headers w/heat exchangers, B&B stainless dual outlet muffler, 1 bar spring and Tial wastegate. Dyno'd 284 RWHP and 326 RWTQ

    1976 930 short bell housing 4-speed trans
    1986 Turbo suspension and breaks
    1991 Carrera interior
    1984 Manual Carrera Cab top
    17" turbo wheels

    2760 pounds. 12.42 @ 113 MPH at Brainerd International raceway. (It's quick!)

    Problems to sort:

Suspension seems very flighty and skittish on anything other than new pavement. If the road is rough, the car tends to skip over cracks and small bumps making for somewhat of a scary ride. Possibly needs coil-overs or softer shocks? This problem make the car not fun to drive.

Convertible top needs adjustment, fit so tight by the installer that it's hard to fasten the latches.

Rear bumper needs replaced or refinished due to heat from exhaust.

    So, what should I do,
pour more money into it to try to make it right?
sell it for whatever I can get even if that's $10-15K?
part the car out in hopes of making the most money?

Personally, I'd keep it. Fix the issues. It's a very fine looking car,
no matter how much FrankenPorsche is going on. Not worth selling,
and it doesn't sound like you need the bux these days (360 and Pantera).
Keep it - it's been a labor of love - keep the love going.

Just my 2/100 of a buck

I've dealt with quite a few cars like yours. The way I see it, you really have two options if the plan is to keep it.

    1. Turn it into the nicest driver possible in its current configuration. Fix the suspension problems, get rid of those heavy wheels and put something modern/forged with the right tires. Fix the top, or don't, just use it to cruise top-down all the time.

    2. Ditch the parts that are not "period-correct", like the 964 bodykit and interior. With the money you make back, find some original or fiberglass replacement stuff for the exterior. Re-targa the top and install some earlier seats (lots of high-quality replicas out there) and a lightweight carpet kit. Restore the '72 oil system, as it appears that is long-gone. Put some RSR-finish 16" fuchs with good rubber, and maybe tie-up some other loose ends. You'll basically end-up with a widebody early Targa with a badass turbo motor, which is a combo you rarely see, but that would be tons of fun.

If you go with option #2, you'll end up with something along these lines...

I see a lot of potential in it, and it's clear you really do like the car, if only b/c you've dumped so much money into it. Feel free to PM me if you want to bounce around ideas.

Has the car been aligned? It's possible that the alignment is off enough to make it feel twitchy and scary to drive. If so, that's a super easy fix and would make a world of difference. Otherwise, I think the car should be worth a fair amount more than 10K, I was thinking somewhere closer to 20K here in CA.

Yes, alignment done prior. Everything was A-ok. I'm not sure where to go from there. Possibly some adjustable shocks and/or coil overs?

Gotta be a 'fix' - find it. That car is just too pretty to scrap out. So
what if it's a FrankenPorsche... still looks nice to me (and apparently others
    in this thread).

I would sell the car, but as I told another F-chatter, I think the number should be more like $16K or $17k. I feel that's about what I would make parting the car out. I'm not opposed to trying to sort the problems, but I really don't know how. I hate just to throw money at it and find out that it wasn't the problem and just have that much more in the car.

Honestly the thought of going out to the garage and tearing the car apart makes me ill. :(

fix it or sell it. your choice. if you don't drive it, sell it...

e-bay will tell you what it's worth...

you said in the OP, you'd sell for 10-15K if need be...

put it on e-bay with a 10K opening bid / reserve and let it fly...

Keep it... its token money, and you will one day miss it...

Regarding the twitchiness, take it to a porsche shop for the alignment...

I just bought an 88 930, which pulled left. I am sure the previous owners did "alignments..."

Took 10 minutes to see that the caster was way off, and had never been touched. Fixed that at home with an incline gauge, a hammer, and an hour of work...now tracks perfectly...

Most alignment placed don't seem to screw with caster/camber adjustments on porsches... don't know if they don't want to, or don't think it can be done...

    Sounds quite repairable, though...

$15k should be pretty easy to get for that car...

    Well guys, it's sold.

It brought only $14,500. Crazy thing is it's headed for the Netherlands! You will all think I am nuts, but I want to buy a factory 930 coupe. Nothing special, just a 3.3 liter car. I just can't get over thinking this was one of the all time best looking cars. I feel that the 930 looks it's best as a coupe and not a convertible. I have seen some decent examples sell in the mid $20's.

Now I'm actually kicking around letting go of the Pantera, but I'll post that in the "Other Italian" forum to get a little input.
