Okay, so this afternoon, i was at Ferrari of Atlanta... Just as i was about to leave, a 360 pulls in and parks. The owner gets out, i pull up along side him and say, "Excuse me, would you mind if i took some pictures of your car...?"

"No, not at all, go right ahead..."

Beautiful. So i park again, whip out my camera and start shooting. i run back inside 'cause i forgot to tell someone something and when i go back outside to leave - there's a 911 Carrera in the parking lot...!

So i go back over to my car, get my camera and start taking pictures...

    "Excuse me..."

    i turn around.

"Why do you need pictures of my car...?" said the owner.

    "i don't... i just... want them..."

    "Why...?"

"No reason... i just love cars... i've been here all afternoon taking pictures of all the cars... i don't "need" the pictures... i'll certainly erase them if you'd like... i just love cars and i like to take pictures of them... Do you want me to erase them...?"

"No... No, that's okay, i suppose..."

"Seriously, i'll erase them if you want..."

He paused... "No, that's alright..." But he still looked pretty wary...

"Okay... Listen, i'm sorry if i offended you..."

He didn't say anything as he turned around to go back inside, but he was obviously perturbed at my photographing his Porsche... He wasn't around outside for me to ask permission and i guess, since no one's ever said anything to me before, i've never seen it as a problem to take pictures... Should i have gone inside, sought out the owner and asked permission...? If i have time to spare, i'll pull in just about anywhere to photograph a parked car... If the owner is present, i'll always ask permission first (except at a concours, where a thousand other people are running around with cameras), but no one's ever said anything to me before, so i just assumed, at a Ferrari dealership, it wouldn't be a problem...

Was i wrong in assuming this...? Should i never photograph someone's car without their permission (except at a concours, where it's openly accepted)...? The guy was visibly perturbed about the whole thing and i felt like ****** afterwards, and i certainly don't want FoA thinking i'm scaring off their customers... What do you say...?

I think you should just keep doing what you've been doing. You might find people who are paranoid like that every once in a while but most people won't react like that, and you may miss out photographing some very nice cars. You can't really be blamed, since it's parked out in public. Don't feel too bad about the guy, he's probably a nice guy. It's a new car, he just might not be used to the attention and maybe is worried that people will try to steal it.

I think the real question is ... after he went back inside did you keep taking pictures? :)

PS Post pics of the 360 please!

No, i was completely turned off and felt like ******, so i just went back to my car and left... i think the guy was just concerned and i certainly don't blame him; that's why i offered to erase the pictures...

i'll try and post the 360 pictures tomorrow... For now, go check out the Superamerica pictures i posted in Modern; Rosso Rubino... the car looks incredible...

Dude....I didn't have problems with you taking pics of my 911...it was your intense desire to get me to sign my name on those Scientology Recruitment Forms that pissed me off.

By the way...Scientologists DON'T WEAR Hare Krishna uniforms.

  10. Should have been no problem. The guy must have never owned an ego car.. That's part of the deal when you buy something desireable. My brick layer hit a Carrera, black with a full glass roof, like that one two weeks ago. He crossed into the Porsche's path. Believe it or not, the full size Dodge truck of his got totaled, the Porsche will need a hood, left fender, and a few things.

    It's because he's a Porsche owner, pure & simple.

He asked one guy and was allowed to snap pictures.

He didn't ask another guy and the guy asked why the pictures were being taken. He may have said yes if he was asked, or he may have had the same standoff-ish attitude about it. To say it's because he drives a Porsche is the same as saying all Ferrari owners have their cars because they have small johnson's.

I saw that too and laughed my ass off. I was going to point it out, but I also take photos of Porsches now. They are the last cars I get to, but I've photographed a few. We has a Turbo S at the last event. It's pretty cool... It comes standard with carbon ceramic brakes.

If it's in a public place, I don't see a problem taking pics for personal use. If you post on the net and there's no value for showing it is a specific/identifable car, then respect privacy and wipe out identifiers/plates (legally I don't think you need to do that if the car was in a public place, but I think it's more respectful). If the owner is present, it is certainly a courtesy to explain your purpose and clear it with them; which you tried to do. So I think you did everything right.

It's just that Porsche owners aren't used to the kind of attention that Ferrari owner's are used to getting, so it was probably a bit disorienting to him :D.

That guy needs to get over himself! Who does he think he is? Somebody so important that you can't take a pic of his car?

I agree, you certianly responded appropriatly(sp?) when he questioned you, but really, if he is driving the car in public, you could have told him to go jump in a lake!

The thing that we all know is that when you are fortunate enough to be able to own and drive vehicles so (relatively) rare, you should expect that others will enjoy looking at them. Kind of a double standard, or like arguing both sides of an argument.... I guess, part of his enjoyment of owning/driving a Porsche is the fact that not "everybody" has one, right? So how the hell can he be upset about you taking pics of the car?

I'm surprised someone like that can fit himself, and his apparently huge ego into a tiny car like that...

    Well... (your favorite) WWED!

The old man would probably have thrown a screaming fit and told this punk to buy a real car!
