Answer truthfully. You're a DA (Desk Assistant) in a dorm. Two girls come down to tell you that one of them left their room for a second to go see the other and saw a suspicious kid walking in their hallway. She returns to her room to find her laptop missing. So they are telling you this, you call Public Safety and alert them. As the girls are waiting for the elevator, the suspicious kid comes down in the main lobby on his cell phone, they think it's him but he changed clothing. You're stuck and have no clue what to do as you were never trained for this, you have a responsibility not to leave the desk but a more important personal responsibility to protect the girls. However in this case, neither you nor the girls are too sure if it's him b/c he has changed clothing, you tell the girls watch over him so you can call public safety again, kid starts walking they follow and he runs, they start to chase him. They pass a group of kids, and scream he stole my laptop, about 5 guys start chasing him, they run across the st. and a cop sees this happening, so he gives chase. Kids catch up and knock him to the ground, open the bag and find her laptop plus a few school books stolen as well. Kid is arrested.

    A. Should you have done what you did and made the call
    B. Asked the kid to come over b/c you have to talk to him
    C. **** the phone call and given chase as well

Most importantly noone is hurt in the end, besides the f#cking idiot's parents who get a phone call their son was caught stealing.

Many of my friends were desk clerks at the dorms, and the one thing I always heard was that if you're the only person at the desk, you can't leave. What would have happened if you had left, and something more serious, like a fire, happened?

The girls were in no immediate danger, the guy just had their stuff. I'd say you made the right call.

What are the chances of such a thing happening at that time though?

What's bothering me the most is if he turn and swung he would have hit the girl. I am much better suited for that and though not a big guy when angry if swung at will take him down with whatever energy I have.

The fact that you posted this thread and are analyzing your actions shows that you are a very responsible young man.

BTW, I agree you did the right thing.

Surprisingly (or maybe not), it's exactly the same odds as a fire breaking out at any other time.

Sounds like you did the right thing. No worries at all. And you can only be a factor in your own behaviour, not someone else's. Otherwise, how else would you want it turned out? Non-violently? The guy would have been caught by you for stealing. What if he had a knife? Heck, for a $1K or $2K notebook, yea... he's going to run.

Right thing, your 1st responsibility is to the entire dorm.

Made the call, girls took chase, nabbed the bad guys all is well.

Oh, and how about an answer to Darth's question? Your actions should have at least been good for a couple of phone numbers.

Wow, what a coincedence this came up. Here's my story, and what I did.

I work as a manager at a supermarket, in charge when the big boss isn't around. Last Tuesday I had just sat down, when one of our employes came to me and said he saw some junkie steal some frozen chickens. I have always been told not to chase these people, and just let them go about their ways. Well I chose not to, I don't know why, but I didn't. So I engaged in a pursuit, and caught the junkie. I escorted him to our office and sat him down, I asked a collague to call security, and so he did, while I was guarding the junkie. Suddenly he reaches out and takes a vodka that was on the table next to him, and starts drinking it. I get a little agitated and tells him that I've had it, and that is stealing, AGAIN and reaches to take the bottle from him, we get in a struggle and the vodka spills all over the place. I finally manage to wrestle it from him and turn my back to place it at another table. The junkie that attacks me from the back, and we struggle and fight quite a bit for some time, security still not present. I yell at my co worker, but then get's him under control in a choke hold. My co worker appears and we get the junkie down on the ground and literally sits on him. We call the police and they arrive shortly. The junkie is arrested, and we think it's all over. But one of the police officers points at my hand, and tells me my hand looks pretty bad. It then turn out that the ****ing moron has bid my hand hard, and has penetrated severely in 3 different places. They tell me to go to the hospital asap, and get a doctor to examine it. Well, I can tell you, that because I chose to chase this ****er down, I know have hepatitis, and is undergoing treatment. Luckily no HIV and Aids was transferred, but that could just as easily have been.

My point is, that I think you made the right choice, and these situations are extremely hard to deal with. When you are in the situation, it's so hard to make a choice. It's so easy to say what you are gonna do when you haven't been in the situation. When something then happen, you may act differently. I know I did, and today at work, someone stole again and I took pursuit. Nothing happened this time, and he was charged for shoplifiting, but he could have had a knife or something, and so could the guy from your dorm. These situations are difficult, and you seem to have kept your head clear and as someone else said in a post earlier, what if something worse happened while you were playing policeman. Good job

Don't quit your post unless properly relieved. Aka, don't leave the desk.

Call the Corporal of the guard in any case not covered by instructions. Aka, call higher or the cops if there is a problem.

You did the right thing, delegate, delegate, delegate. Who knows if he would of had a weapon on him. Your not there it enforce the law, your there to notify if anything is to happen.

Depending on how close he was, I would have sprinted towards him and if he ran I would have grabbed him. Then if legal, I would have searched his bag. If I didn't find anything I would threaten him within an inch of his life, never to steal, lie or tell anyone about this night. If I found the cpu, I would have bashed him good with it! Yeah, so you go to jail, yeah you wrecked the very item that you were searching for, yeah someone's hurt... be a man and live well knowing you whooped someone good!

P.S. If I ever need a night clerk/ security guard, I'll give you a call.
P.P.S. I probably won't even bash you once.
    P.P.P.S Ok... maybe once.

There was no special moment w/ any of the girls afterwards. They were decent looking but nothing came of it. Would have been interesting though.

I think the biggest thing is, being a college guy you kind of want to do something special to feel like the hero. But that last post about getting Hepatitis after a robbery is a little too freaky to be the hero.

Well, it didn't even cross my mind until the policeofficer called my attention to the bitemarks on my fingers. In the heat of the battle I never even noticed it.. But just to make things clear, it wasn't a robbery, it was just a shoplifter. He just happened to be a junkie..
