I'm looking for some ideas here because I am really pissed. (sorry it's long)

In late January I took my Jag into a a Body shop recommended by the log time Jag dealer in this area to get the front bumper repaired and painted. Those damn cement parking stops are all too tall for this car. This shop does Bentleys, Rolls Jags etc.

So I go to talk to the guy and he's very nice and tells me that they'll buff the entire car out when they're finish and that sounds great to me. It's a low mileage car and I'm trying to keep it nice. In addition we eventually work out a price for a scuffed up rocker panel that's not a part of the insurance claim. He says to bring the car in right away and they'll get started. It's a crummy area and I'm nervous about it being parked on the street during the day but he does have a lot of high end cars there. he came recommended.

After about a week I check in and nothing doing. They're waiting for parts.
Finally they call and it's done. I go over and no they're still working on the rocker panel.
But he then informs me that He's going to need another $100 because there was a dent in the front fender and they had to repair that or when they blend the paint it wont look right. B f'ng S. I washed that car before delivering it. OK so I can cause a huge scene for $100 but they did buff the entire car out and it looks really nice now. Better than when I bought it two years ago. When I start driving home I notice that 1/8 of a tank ogf gas is missing , I did not record the mileage, and I start wondering if this thing got a hot ride or something. Its the 400HP supercharged model. I decide to forget about it and I've been using the car ever since.

So today was my first chance to detail the car and I get to the back of the car and I notice that the brushed stainless exhaust tips are dirty. They don't clean with soap & water. Bug & Tar remover doesn't clean them up. It looks a bit like some tar or exhaust spatter is covering them. Finally I take a paper towel soaked in brake clean and they clean really nice but the towel is bright green. The same color of my car!

I look under the rear and there is green over spray everywhere. WTF? They were working on the front so why is there over spray on the rear. The left facia of the bumper is a bit orange peeled now too!

I noticed none of this when I picked the car up but I was focused on the front of the car.

It's clear to me that something did happen while my car was there. It's been five months but I am really pissed about being lied to. Especially when I challenged him on the supposed dent in the front and he assured me that nothing had happened.

It sounds like they damaged the rear and then had the chutzpah to lie to me AND charge me for their damage.

The over spray and tailpipes don't lie but these guys do!

They do a lot of work of wealthy folks cars here in N. NJ.

Since they've already lied like hell to me I'm not terribly optimistic about them explaining what really happened. That's what I really want. I think they should clean up the rear of the car and give me the $100 bucks back too. But the lying is the biggest thing.

    So any recommendations?

Unfortunately many places charge premium prices for sub-par work, especially when their average customer doesn't know what to look for. If you're sure that the over-spray wasn't from a repair prior to your ownership, either by a dealer or previous owner, then i would have it inspected by an independent shop. I wouldn't explain the situation because they may not be completely honest with you for fear of getting involved in a legal dispute(Although I wouldn't involve them in any sort of legal action). They have proven that they're not going to be honest with you unless you've caught them red-handed.

I know it wasn't there before I took it in and it hasn't been in any other shop for any reason since. Just parked at my house. So unless one of my neighbors bumped the rear bumper and had it touched up while I was away for the day (not very likely ...) it was them. It's been 4 months. They dribbled clear coat on the bumper in couple of spots which rubbed out. I can't believe I didn't see that at the time. But I can't envision any scenario where it happened any other way.

It seems very weird that a shop that did very nice work on the rest of the car and buffed the whole thing out would not protect the stainless exhaust tips, get over spray under the car (especially if they were trying to hide this) and then dribble clear on the bumper as well.

Maybe an employee was hiding his error from the boss and had to do a hasty job? That would be hard to do in that shop unless it was done after hours?

This just doesn't make sense to me?

I have had my share of horror stories in New Jersey that is why I only take my Jaguar to the body shop my dealership (Ray Catena) recommends which is Quality Auto Body in Rahway NJ. 811 New Brunswick, Rahway, NJ 07065. 732-388-2400

I have had all my Jags in this shop and they have all come out perfect. I am a very very picky customer too. These guys are certified by Jaguar.

Your horror story is very typical around here in NJ, i.e. the shop driving around your car, getting it into an accident and not telling you. Quality doesnt do that kind of stuff.

The overspray is probably from being in the spray booth.. They should have masked it off well enough to avoid he overspray.. the overspray spreads like wild fire especially if they painted the bumper on the car.. and spraying down below.. the paint has know where else to go but to continue under the car.. I doubt they had an accident and repaired it without telling you.. As far as the dribble on the clear, poor quality control.. period.. I've been a damage appraiser in NJ for 22 years.. Do they specialize in Jaguar and are they located in the Haledon area?

I disagree with you saying that its typical around here in NJ... I dont believe it and I think your off base my man.. Its not typical... You think they need to drive your car around town to get their rocks off.. Your head that big?? Maybe once in a while, let say if they were doing a test drive or a shake down before delivery but not to take the car as you say.. I'm not saying it never happened but it not typical.. Quality Auto Body does excellent work.. Very detailed but even they can have a bad day (not typical).. Ive had my E550 repaired their a few years back.. it was black and the clear was starting to oxodize... Lease was up and never brought it back.. I had my other e320 repaired there, this car was white.. repairs came out nice.. white covers well.. black is a *****.. They are certified jaguar..

I have not named any shop so let's not go suggesting who you think it might be. Someone might get a wrong idea. That isn't fair.

    OK?

NO WORK WAS SCHEDULED FOR THE REAR OF THE CAR!
OVER SPRAY DOESN'T GET ON A CAR AND LOOK THIS WAY FROM JUST FLOATING AROUND IN THE BOOTH.

If YOU actually saw the car and the over spray you'd understand. There's a pretty obvious spray line from a gun on the underside of my car in the rear.

But let's for the sake of argument say that someone really f***ed up and made a mess of my rear bumper because the masking came off. Then they decided to "fix" this by respraying my bumper and then not informing me? Something is fishy here.

I wasn't there when this happened so I can't know WHAT happened just that something did and the rear of my car got sprayed with some clear dibbled on it. That last part is really strange to me.

    This needs explaining.

I appreciate people commenting, that is after all why I posted this, but let's try to get back on topic.

I still need to approach this shop. I've intentionally waited before doing so because I don't think going over there just mad as hell is the best approach.

I've had things happen at shops plenty of times. Much worse than this, ugh. :( The good ones handle it professionally and move on. It's just that in this case it started out with a phantom dent that they only documented after the bondo was on it.

    WTF does that prove?

You at least give the customer a call first. So I'm starting out suspicious.
