I don't like using the Ferrari tools. My current plug sockets won't fit down the hole and those that do are too big for the plug head. What do you guys use?

I do. I just use a standard "thin-walled" socket + extension: nothing exotic to it.

I used a regular 5/8 spark plug socket with an extension.

Weird. The setup I used for my 308 is way too wide for the tunnels on the 456. They don't come out do they? I must be missing something here because I can't get my normal this walled sockets down the tube.

I tried my 5/8 spark plug sockets too. What brands are you using?

I have a Hazet (German made) thin wall 5/8 which is what I use on the V12s.

Finally figured it out. Last cam cover job left a bunch of silicone residue in the holes that prevented my socket from going in. It was a pita but I got them all out. Live and learn.

Stu, that's kinda unusual workmanship on a cam cover replacement job ... I mean... that's fairly easy stuff and it sounds like whoever did the work wasn't the most skilled mechanic on the planet. If that's the case then one wonders what else the same mechanic might have touched/messed with using the same "fat fingers".

Be patient and take your time going through everything with a fine-tooth comb...

You bet. Trying to sort out if I want to rebuild the heads now or wait until the valve guides let go (if they ever do). Could be a bunch of wasted work one way or the other.

Stu- There seems to be many more good sets of valve guides than bad sets, so..........

It's tan. Looking at the service history I think it was a Ferrari dealer that did the cam covers last. Think the last belt change was a lock and swap so didn't take the cam covers off.
