I need to get a new external hard drive; I'm tired of my WD My Book Studio working when it feels like working.

With this being said, what's a good drive out there with a low failure rate?

I don't need anything crazy, and portability is not a concern. I also don't need anything larger than 2TB.

I'm a MAC user, so it needs to be Time Machine friendly.

I have a WD 1TB, don't know what model, but it works perfect. Its on of the stand alone versions, it was only $79. The people at our Apple store said the WD work the best with hte Imacs.

Probably not to helpful, but thats my experience.

I've been using a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex for Mac with my MacBook Air for over a year, and so far it's done it's job.

Isn't Time Capsule a no-brainer if that's what you want?

It'll certainly work! But it incorporates a wi-fi basestation and isn't cheap.....

I've been using a Buffalo 2TB dual drive for years now. Configured as RAID-1 (mirrored) I'm confident that even if one drive dies I'm still good.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Time Capsule is too much for what I need. Maybe when I become a home owner I'll get that solution.

No such thing exists. The only way to mitigate drive failure is to have multiple drives from different manufacturers. Externals are cheap these days, so grab 3 2TB units from different manufacturers and you'll be good (unless struck by lightning, house burns down, house is robbed, angry girlfriend hammers your toys).

Having to buck up to multiple devices seems like a pain at first...but there's no pain like loosing all your data.
