If you think things are happening too fast.... you are in over your head. When you are over your head, the tendency is to start looking closer and closer to the front of your car...... instead of down the road. The closer you look to the front of your car, the more rushed you feel, and you will actually be slower.

When you look down the road, everything slows down for you, and you don't feel rushed. Slow things down a bit. Gradually pick up the pace, but keep your gaze further down the road. If you can manage that, you won't feel rushed, and you will get quicker.

I was just going to say the same thing. I have noticed that people who feel like the car is driving them rather than the other way around, are either not looking forward enough, or are simply way over their heads with regard to the equipment.

I think to a certain degree many people would like to be able to drive like Vettle, Alonso, or whoever their personal race car hero happens to be, but often find out the hard way that this is not going to happen without either a ton of time and money, A LOT of seat time in cars that are not sporting ultra high HP, and lets face it some god given natural talent certainly does not hurt, as well.

What I noticed here though is that the OP is not looking to become the next Steve McQueen here, he simply wants to pursue the hobby of being a DE Instructor. I am perhaps missing something here, but it would seem to me that the best instruction has nothing to do with how fast your car is. Teaching something like competitive driving, is so much more complicated than simply having some ability to control and drive a high HP car.

I instead put forward that the teaching of correct theory, preparation, race line awareness, and overall car competence and control are far more important than actual speed attained. Speed is easy to come by if you have all the basics.

Check out a book called Inner Speed Secrets if you have the time. I think that you will find this to be most informative. I know the one of the authors of this book and have worked in his driving school in the past. There is a lot of great knowledge, and should help to answer quite a few of the questions that you might have moving up through the ranks so to speak.

    I hope that this helps,

    Erik Johnson
