As a relatively new 348 owner, I am interested in getting the car as original as possible. I have noticed many things about the 348 series that have changed over the years and I know some of you out there know about them, and some don't. I thought this would be a good thread to help some of us 348 nuts. (apologies if this has already been done).

I had a mechanic in Portland tell me that before '92 the lower rocker panels on the car were the flat black and not body colored. The matching body color began in '92.

Mine has the black prancing horse on the back and none on the front. When did this change to chrome in the back and was there a year it became std. on the front?

Did the car every come with the factory wheels chromed?

I don't have the tool kit. What does it look like, what's included, and where do I get one.

Manuals - I have started getting them. What are the manuals that they look for in a concours?

Back deck lid - I have seen some red models with the rear deck lid a semi-gloss black. Was there a year that this became body colored?

Thanks in advance for all the help. I know there are some of you out there that can add more to this.

IIRC, lower rockers and lower bumpers should be matte black. Engine lid closest to rear window should be same matte black. I've got a black car, and *still* have resprayed those areas to look glossy - with the exception of the engine lid. On non black cars, I think it looks more aggressive when everything is painted body color.

I don't think chrome wheels were an option.

I have added a front horse to mine, and it makes a gigantic difference in the visual appearance of the front. Aside from the bling factor, it creates a nice visual break on the grill (which as you've probably noticed, is entirely decorative and serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever).

Original 348 owners manuals are still available, wrapped in plastic.

The tool kit (on ebay) will run about $750 with all the tools and fix-a-flat intact. It looks like an old briefcase or something -- about 21" x 13" x 5", two "trays" on the inside.

If it's a 348 ts or tb then it would have originally had the black lower panels and a black horse on the rear.

With the introduction of the 348 GTB and GTS the body became all one colour and the 'Cavalino Rampante' became silver.

The GTB and GTS were introduced at the Frankfurt Salon in October 1993.
