Does anyone have any ideas what the total loss and PNO (planned non-operation, i.e. car gets so ratty it gets put in the back of the barn or garage waiting for a time when it can be restored) rate per year is? Ferrari seems to be up to 140K cars total build (not sure how many gaps there are in the serial sequence). Just wondering how many cars are actually capable of getting on the road to be seen and enjoyed.

Not that it answers your question, but on a related topic...

I believe that a short film/ad on the Porsche website a couple of years ago indicated that more than 80% of all Porsches ever built are still on the road.

I wonder if the number is that high for Ferrari? Given the collectability and prestige the marque carries, I would assume it is similar, if not slightly higher.

Just as anecdotal evidence, I went to wreckedexotics.com and they appear to have 17 pages of F360 crashes. There were 20 photos per page and I'm guesstimating an average 2-3 photos per crash. Since fender-benders don't make wreckedexotics generally, I'll assume that the vast majority are totalled cars. That's 115-170 F360's lost out of a production of 15K cars with an average age of 3 years (1999-2005). And wreckexotics certainly doesn't have every loss and likely not even the majority.

Sure hope enough of these 360s are left in 20 years so I can buy one!

Mercedes Benz prides itself on nearly every car ever built still on the road, but the mark has prestige, retained value, and quality in its favor to motivate owners to keep the car running. Now the vast majority of Ferraris ever built have been built in the last 20 years. These cars clearly have more of the prestige to stay around than MB, but build quality and availablility and cost of parts is inferior when the car is 10+ years old. So my guess is that percentage wise there are ultimately less Ferraris on the road than the German cars. Now vintage Ferraris is another story, but this makes up a small fraction of all Ferraris ever built.

You must know that some Ferraris are wreck and two will appear in place of the one. There can be great aguements over which is real and which is not.

    Yin,
Here is how to calculate total production roughly. Up to vin# 75000, they used anly odd numbers. Thet are now up to about 143,000. So, there were 37,500 cars up to 75K and about 68,000 since plus about 8000 Dinos which had there own vin sequence of even #'s. So a rough estimate 113,500 cars so far. There have been more produced in the last 15 years than in the first 40.
