I like Arizona, my parents had a house there. Been thinking about buying a house there for winters. Vancouver isn't bad in winter, mostly low 40's. But it rains too much. My brother keeps sending me houses from all over Texas. Compared to Paradise Valley and Scottsdale Arizona, houses in Texas are more reasonable. The only negative for me is distance to Vancouver. Phoenix can be done driving in under 30hrs. That's about my time limit in a car. I also like being close to San Diego and Los Angeles. But Id never buy in California, its too easy to become liable for state income tax there. What I like about California is being close to the ocean. So Texas close to Ocean would be a positive and eliminate the need to be California close.

What's the weather like in winter. The other positive for Arizona is being near big lakes. I don't know any big lakes in Texas. I have spent two days in Dallas. I've also driven through Texas twice. But other then that, don't know what its like.

    That's an understatement.

Zudnic, there are a ton of lakes in Texas, the best would be Lake Austin, Lake Travis and Canyon Lake.

While we may be close to the beach, there's absolutely no comparison between the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Pacific will win all day long.

The weather during the winter varies year to year. But on average, it's in 50's between December and February.

Z... I've lived almost everywhere in the U.S. And visited the rest, except Alaska, and Texas is my favorite. The people are friendly, the winters are mild, taxes and property are cheap compared to coasts, lots to do, easy to travel from via road and plane, I can drive the Porsche all year, everything from built up city living with shops and restaurants for urban sophisticates to ranch living out in the boonies and all options in between. The main issue for many is that the summer is hotter 'n carp! But, if you're looking at a winter resting spot, that's not an issue...T

I found that Texas makes up for no state income tax with property tax. Some of the houses I've seen here in Dallas have bigger tax bills than I make in a year...

You can control that by how much house you want and where it is. Texas has lower insurance costs on all coverage's, lower gas prices, home and car, lower electricity prices. I know some states are lower still but compared to anyplace I would consider living nearly every single cost in every category is lower here with the exception of property tax rates. And house for house ours is about 50% of the value of where we came from.

And in my experience Texans love to whine about the weather but there is nothing about this climate that gets my attention. The weather here is no hotter than where I lived in California and is cooler than some of California. But then I chose not to move to a swamp.

Depending on the neighborhood, that could be debatable. A higher priced home will probably retain a higher value later on, while tax money is something you definitely won't get back.

$1 mm Texas home will cost $2-3 mm most other places, that's the point. 2.5% on $1 mm or 1.5% on $2-3 mm?

Oh when I spent 3 days in Dallas it was a blast. We have BBQ places here but nothing compared to what I ate there. Same with Mexican food.

The property tax does seem a little high. But not as bad as Arizona. California I believe is the worse in the U.S. now.

50 in winter is fine. Rain once or twice per month is also fine. I'm just tired of what seems like daily rain for most of winter. At least it didn't snow this winter in Vancouver.

I like no state income tax. Places like California if you stay over a short time you become a part time resident and liable for state income tax. You get taxed even on non California sourced income. Property tax is one thing. But income tax when you don't actually live there is crazy.

I just want to be maybe 3 months out of the year in the U.S., more due to weather.

It just looks like for well under $1m you can get a decent house on a good sized property. Same house elsewhere would be well over a million.

One thing California is not worst in is property tax. It is actually pretty good. Income tax I do believe they are #1 in.

There are tons of big lakes in Texas. If you take Lake Mead and Lake Powell out of the equation (and you really should because they're in NV and UT), Texas lakes dwarf AZ lakes. AZ's largest lake is Lake Mohave at 1.8M acre/feet. Texas has 6 lakes bigger than that, 2 of them over twice that size.

Within an hour of Dallas, you have:

    Lake Texoma
    Ray Roberts
    Richland Chambers
    Lake Tawakoni
    Lake Fork
    Cedar Creek Reservoir
    Lake Lewisville
    Possum Kingdom
    Lake Ray Hubbard
    Lake Grapevine
    Eagle Mountain Lake
    Lake Worth
    Benbrook Lake
    Joe Pool Lake
    Lake Arlington

Many of them you can live on, with a dock in your backyard.

    What was the question again?

Click this link and zoom in a bit. See all those blue spots? Lakes.

hey jason, c'mon up to north TX and spend some time on texoma...you might change your mind on the best lakes in TX. possum kingdom is also a beautiful lake though quite a bit smaller. being from austin originally, it's hard for me to say it but i do enjoy texoma more than either travis or austin by a wide margin. and i still own a slip on travis if that tells you anything!

in terms of weather, i characterize our winters as a long spring with some cold snaps here and there...

I think best of everything would be house on Lake Austin. Beautiful lake and properties on the lake, in middle of city and business. Maybe a little crowded in summer. Austin is a great city because I was born there.

I don't know how they call that a lake. It's not even a wide spot in the river.

And they don't allow float planes.

they don't allow float planes? I had one about land on me, but that was 3 years ago. it was also one of the best bass lakes in state until they killed the grass. I think it is good because balance of city and lake. PK is one of best lakes, but middle of nowhere. Texoma middle of nowhere and Oklahoma! ;) Cedar Creek pretty darn good, but still 40 minutes out of Dallas. We will probably get a place on Fork, but that's 100% for the bass fishing.

A retired AF pilot friend has a house with a dock right down there and inquired about float planes. There was no indecisiveness in their response. I was surprised as aviation oriented as Texas is. Could be a Travis county thing.

I need to do that Wade!

You actually triggered a memory for me about Texoma. I only mentioned the lakes I've been to recently or remember vividly. I've been to Texoma at least once when I was little, but maybe one or two other times.

I grew up on the lake and my parents and their friends took us to a bunch of different lakes when I was really little. When my dad got another boat when I was 13 we only went to Lake Somerville and that ended when I graduated high school. It unfortunately, I don't believe has held up over time and not as nice as it was way back then. Not that it was all that nice.;)
