What's the Grossest Thing You Have Seen in Your Career?

As far as personal pain goes, I dropped a 30-pound toothed gear on my right middle finger once. I was 18 years old and in a machine shop at the time. If there's any lesson to be learned here to pass on to the younger people, it's that you get in trouble and careless when you start to think you know everything. Anyway I started bleeding like a stuck pig, but initially didn't feel any pain. I went to First Aid right away, and then eventually to the emergency room of the hospital. The doctors were great. They numbed it up, but they said they were still going to have to pull off the fingernail (a form of torture in some countries). I tried to prepare the best I could, but that is still the loudest I have ever screamed in my life up to now. I went back to work in a couple days and managed the best I could. The following few days were bad as the wound continued to throb in an effort to heal itself. To this day when I start to think I can rule the world, I look at the middle finger of my right hand and see how much bigger the fingernail is than that of the same finger on the left hand. Ouch...

 

I had an ingrown toenail on my big toe and my podiatrist said he wanted to kill the root so it wouldn't grow back. After a week I went back and he said it was infected and had to take the toe nail off. It didn't hurt too much, but the sound of him cutting it off still makes me sick. I never want to experience that again...

 

Oh my god......you guys are making me frickin puke! I don't know what is propelling me to keep reading these!? The toenail thing was especially bad. Going to bed now....time for some nightmares.

 

I have been around some coke'd out people and have seen deterioration of entire facial structures, once i saw this girl that was a big coke head, she got hit in the face by an abusive pimp, and most of her face collapsed. this is all med school stuff and running arround at the hospitals where my mom was doing this or that, not in the course of my careers. so just sharing...

on my right hand, i have a scar on my right ring finger knuckle on my hand at the joint, on the same hand i have the middle knuckle of my index finger torn inside out (exit). Cause: spoon handle inside beer bottle broken by accidental karate chop in downtown LA at E3 in 97, spoon handle enters hand, exits thought index finger. proceed to walk 1.25 miles with arm load of boxes in gang-bangerland to newly constructed Staples Center, make 'first aid' guy pass out when you pull remnants of metal and see bones, avoid stitches, have little control over grip in hand, have great story for the bar.

12ga. shotgun....point blank, to the head. There was a pool of blood on the floor 4 or 5 feet wide. But picture when you spill water on the floor and it's only say about 1/4in thick, in the middle of this pool of blood the blood had coagulated and it had to be 8 to 10 inches thick.

 

The craziest nastiest thing I have ever seen was probably the time my roomate decided to go out drinking with two of my other friends. After finishing off a bottle of Jack Daniels he decided he was going to ride in the back of my friends huge Z71 on the way back home. However as they turned into the driveway he decided to stand up. He did a swan dive out of the truck and dove head first onto the concrete. My friends woke me up freaking out that he had "fallen out of the truck". Thinking to myself no big deal...just pick him up and bring him inside. I put some clothes on and as soon as I opened the front door I could tell we had a problem. He was laying out in the street and it sounded to me like he was snoring real loud. I ran out there and when I got to him he was already laying in a a huge pool of blood. When I grabbed him by the shoulder and rolled him over I literally peeled him off the road. His entire face and skull was caved in and his head was no longer round. Blood coming out his nose mouth and ears. I could tell he was choking so I sat him up and leaned him forward which kept him from swallowing all the blood. My girlfriend called the ambulance and they were there in no time. They got a breathing tube in him and loaded him up as my to other friends were freaking out. I jumped in the front seat of the ambulance as we flew out of my neighborhood. I'll never forget what the ambulance driver said as we came to the main highway. He pulls up to the street, looks over at me and says "Which way"??!! My jaw dropped and all I could mutter was "Which way did you come from"? He told me which hospital and I gave him directions back. To make a long story short after two major blood clots, three major brain surgeries, a titanium skull, and a few weeks in the hospital my friend is perfectly back to normal. He doesn't remember any of it at all and just remembers waking up with a bunch of staples in his head. He has to be the luckiest though not always the smartest guy I know.

I know what you mean - I keep going to see if there is something that tops the colostomy situation...can't help myself.

Well.......I think that Augustine's story has got us all beat.

About 5 years ago a doctor returned an SL600 to our MB dealership when it came off lease.

Naturally inquisitive about the profit potential and condition of what was a $175K car at one time......we went outside to take a look.

"What a beautiful car it was" were my thoughts as I walked up to it.....black on black.....AMG "Sport" package....etc.....open the door though and the smell of rancid cigars wafted thru out......there was a big stogie jammed in the ashtray and the interior had an odor or red wine and old cigars.

MB Credit spent over $25K replacing interior components so that the car would sell at the auction. It turned out that the guy smoked 2cigars a day in the car......over the term of a 24 month lease. The smell will stick with me forever........

 

Back when i was in NY working at the insurance brokerage, i had to go a WHOLE WEEK without FerrariChat... It was truly the sickest thing i'd ever endured at a job... i get nauseous just thinking about it... Ugh...

 

Many years ago our law firm represented a township in the following lawsuit. A man walked into a dealership complaining that his car was not repaired properly. Apparently, the dealership had worked on the car previously and he was still experiencing problems with the car. Upset that the dealership was unable to fix his car and had stolen his money, he started to become rather boisterous and rude. Worried that he would scare other customers, the dealership asked him to leave.

Wanting to make a statement, the guy took off his clothes and started to run around the dealership naked and screaming at the salesmen. In short, this guy went crazy and scared the crap out of everyone in the dealership. Unknown to the dealership, this guy was high on angel dust. The police arrived shortly and started to chase the guy. He ran outside and the police attempted to detain him. The police eventually caught the guy, and in the process of apprehending him, they ripped his testicles off. Yes, the police managed to rip both his ba11s off. Now that had to really hurt. They guy then sued the dealership, the police, and the township.

I was out one day, driving around (with a buddy) when we got next to an attractive female in a convertible VW who was playing with herself while driving down the street. I bet my buddy 50 bucks that she would smell her fingers at the next red light.

I work in the housekeeping department of a hospital, so not only do I see gross stuff but I get to clean them up. Never new gastro-intestinal bleeds could smell so bad, or that blood actually had a distinct smell. Poop, vomit, blood, urine, surgery rooms, ob rooms, I've cleaned them all and a lot more. Saw a woman with her foot almost all the way torn off when her horse ran into a fence. Saw a guy with gangreen (sp?) on both of his legs from the knees down. When he bumped the rail on the side of his bed, his flesh just flaked off and bled all over the place. Stunk like rotten milk. The worst was the maggots that were under his skin. This is just a bit of what I see almost everyday at work.

 

Wow, very interesting stories indeed. Can't say that I've got anything to contribute though, I've never been in a situation to see something so repulsive.

However, I did get to see the inside of my arm one time. My dermatologist (sp?) removed a pre-cancerous mole from my right arm, muscle and tissue and everything in clear view. He said he never had a patient so interested in seeing their body cut open, guess I've watched too much TV.

 

This was pre-career...but the most stomach churning event I remember.

One afternoon after school in fall 1967, my senior high school year, a few of us buddies were sitting around at a friend's house and we heard this big muffled "whoooomp!" We had absolutely no idea what was going on until we started to hear voices in the street and went outside and saw lots of people walking toward the neighborhood elementary school a couple of blocks away. A huge cloud of black smoke and flames was rising from the direction of the school.

It turned out that an Aero Commander private airplane had crashed into the bicycle rack area and back of the girls' gym at the school. It had lost power on takeoff from the nearby airport, and was carrying a full load of fuel. Luckily it was Wednesday and all the schools in our district let out at 3pm on that day each week. This crash was bad enough but if it had been on another weekday there would have been 50+ school age kids in the bicycle rack area at the time of the crash.

The airplane, which had six adults aboard, was completely demolished and what fragments were left were burned to an unrecognizable crisp. The really grisly thing was standing there watching the police and fire medics pull what was left of the occupants from the wreckage. I remember they picked one body up by the arms and the arms just came off at the shoulders. Then, there was a dog running around with a hand and forearm in his mouth and the cops and medics were trying to catch him -- that dog didn't want to give it up. They were trying to account for as many body parts as possible and they were looking real hard for one missing head. A cop finally found it and carried it to a body bag.

That was my old elementary school, and once about 15 years ago I had occasion to go back and visit. The building facade was still scarred in the area where the plane had hit it. I guess the crash is now a legend passed on from one generation to the next of kids attending that school.

About the worst on the job things I remember in my 30 year career as an architect are staring down at a drafting table 8 hours a day, and guys who would come in the drafting room and fart and describe their sex lives in detail to a captive audience.

 

In the late 70's, I had a press operator get her hand caught in a set of gears on the back of her press.

She was doing something dangerous, and against the rules, that was a result of her cutting a corner and washing up a press with a rag wrapped around her hand.

Needless to say, the rag got drawn into the gears, along with her hand. She worked for us for another ten years or so, but minus a couple of digits. She collected enough from Worker's Comp. to buy a nice new Cadillac. Busting the press apart with crow bars and sledge hammers so the rescue crew could get her to the hospital was pretty rough, as was trying to help her during the 20 minutes or so that it took to get her freed.

Another time we had a refrigerator truck jump the curb outside our building and run over a pedestrian. My boss at the time had been a medic in WWII and ran out the front door, did his best to help stop the bleeding while waiting for the ambulance guys, and then went back to work. The victim later died in the hospital. What was gross, beyond the already horrible accident, was that my boss decided that the two handkerchiefs he used (probably under a dollar in value) needed to be saved, and used again, so he set them in the employee wash up sink in a bowl to soak out the blood. That was a pretty horrible sight, after having watched the accident and rescue unfold right before our eyes. He later wrapped then in a plastic bag and took them home, presumably for wife to wash.

I've had two employees hit by trains and killed, both while walking along the tracks in seperate incidents. I've had an employee smother under his own weight while sleeping. Had one killed in car and one in a motorcycle accident. I had an employee who was a GREAT GRANDMOTHER before she was 50. I guess when you work long enough, you get an unbelievable collection of co-worker/employee stories.

 

A Navy buddy and I were out on the flight line one warm summer evening, waiting to recover and debrief the crews from two separate aircraft that were out on a training mission. The first plane arrived and we debriefed the crew. While waiting for the second plane to arrive 2 or 3 large explosions lit up the night sky in a brilliant orange. My friend and I looked at each other in amazement and couldn't figure out what was happening. We initially thought the base was under attack but finally realized it was a plane crash.

Our squadron's executive officer and his copilot, in the second plane, had landed and were taxiing back to our hangar. They had to cross the active runway and radioed for permission from the tower. One of the air traffic controllers told them to go ahead, so they started across the runway. As they crossed the runway another controller grabbed the microphone and screamed for them to "hold fast! Do not cross the runway yet!" Our x.o.'s last words, "Negative. Too late." At that time an A7 Corsair, nearing take-off speed, t-boned their jet, literally cutting it in half. The A7 tried in vain at the last moment to get airborne and clear our jet but he ended up hitting our's directly in the cockpit. All 3 pilots were killed.

A couple weeks later my commanding officer handed me a manila envelope which contained some pictures. He told me "don't show these to anyone. Please keep them private." They were pictures of myself and my executive officer taken just a week or two before he was killed, at my re-enlistment ceremony. He was my favorite officer in our squadron and I picked him to re-enlist me, as tradition allowed in my squadron.

3 piles of doggie diarrhea this morning on our living room carpet.

 

When I was working as an asst golf pro, I was closing the club house one night and inspection the place before I let the bag boys go home. I noticed that one of the toilets did not have any water in it. I knew something was wrong, so I tried to flush it when the bowl started to fill, the biggest turd I have ever seen floated up from inside the drain area of the bowl. The entire bowl filled up and started to overflow before I had a chance to shut of the water. The funny thing was, there was no paper in the bowl. Being familiar with the concetpt of gravity and the order in which things should be done in the bathroom, I fully expected a huge wad of paper, not a solo turd. After trying to figure out what to do, the Head Pro and I had the two bag boys use the wet/dry vac to suck out everything, since we could not the the water level to go down. We then set the high pressure hose that hooked up the the irrigation system into the bowl, packed the bowl with towels and had on of the bag boys stand on the towels while we turned on the water. The worst part of it was that it was the women's restroom and we were pretty sure we knew did it. We all could not stop laughing everytime she came in the proshop.

 

Darth, I think that the story would have been grosser if you bet your friend $50 that she would let him smell her fingers at the next stop light. That would be super gross! Yuck.

BTW, nothing beats that colostomy story. That is the grossest thing I have ever heard. I can't believe I got through this whole thread without puking.
