    Gentlemen:

Let's hear about them....the bad ones....the ones that make us all proud to drive exotic cars. I'd even like to hear about other car brand prices, I'm sure Porsche and BMW have their horror stories.

I'd like to hear about what the part was, what car it was for, did you find a cheaper alternative, and what you learned in the process. It's great to pool knowledge!

    Thanks!
    Wes

The highest single part I had to buy was a windshield for my 1998.5 Testarossa.

It had a small crack in the lower drivers side, nothing to impede the view but the fact having a cracked windshield in a ferrari drove me nuts.

It ended up costing me $ 3,000.00 US and having to wait 6 months for it to arrive from Italy.:(

Rear bonnet to include the louvers for my 308 GTS. I picked one up from Butch Hooper for $3500 when the going price was about $6500. GJ Butch!!!

Windshield for my ex-308 Total was 3K installed. 2K for the windshield and 1K labor which I thought was criminal. State Farm paid though. Only cost me $50.00

Not the actual highest priced, but ouch:

    1. $110.00+tax for a replacement rubber shift lever boot.

    2. $95.00 each for silentblok rear suspension bushings-I bought eight, and it was a damn good price -- another place wanted $150.00 each

The highest priced single part unit I've bought for my Ferrari was the new Timevalve SS exhaust system; don't remember the exact price but I think it was about $2,500.00 for the center and rear sections for both sides.

The Ferrari parts are a bargain in relation to car value when compared to the costs for my old 635CSi.

A new bonnet (i.e., the whole front end hood assembly) for a '72 Jaguar XKE after I hit a deer a couple of years ago. The only manufacturer now is Martin Robey Panels in England. With the unfavorable exchange rate and shipping -- $7800. That's the shiney new bonnet, after install and complete respray of the entire car, that you see in my avatar.

    $90 for a new thermostat.

I think the most expensive single part I've had to replace is still the CT-20 turbocharger from the Celica GT-Four (Factory, $2600). Plus installation, new radiator, etc., ran it up to about $4K.

And after all that, what really caused the radiator to melt down was a ten cent cycle hose that fell off inside the overflow tank. (Non-pressurized cooling system.)

The lesson: Half the time a shop wants to sell you expensive service, he isn't expecting repeat business.

Okay, the turbo did improve things -- but it wasn't what the car came in for. Real diagnosis is getting rare. Shops just change the parts they know how to change, whether it's related or not.

I called every Ferrari Dealer I could find to see if they could get me one or if they had one. They all told me it would have to be imported from Italy. They all gave the same ballpark price so I let Norwoods of Dallas get it for me.

Real Bummer. I didn't turn it into my insurance company because I had a really good rate and did not want it to escalate.

I cringed everytime I hear a bug hit the windshield. hehe

Glad you asked! My cassette water pump for my 72 Lotus TC includes a new front cover for only $650, but since it's an engine out, it was $1500 water pump. Maybe not outrageous for a Ferrari, but an awful lot for a car 'nobody' really cares about.

Over $1900 for a new limited slip differential for my GTC. That's just the limited-slip clutch/bevel gear assembly - NOT the ring gear.

Labor - no charge, I did it myself. Quite easy.

I saw a 308 windshield on ebay yesterday for $450 first bid and $750 with Buy It Now. Not a bad price if I had a place to store it. I hope someone else take him up on his offer. If I run across it again, I'll post the link.
