Well, if this counts, I had to get a new engine after a small rock hit the undercarriage on my 550. $51,548.64 not counting labor ($5720) or additional parts involved in replacing the engine (another $500 or so). Insurance covered this, too, so I didn't really Buy it...

To be specific, a rock (not huge - the kind most cars in front of me sped over without even touching) hit the front sway bar, which in turn flexed into the oil pressure sending unit, which in turn drained all the oil out of my engine while I pulled over to the side of the road.

I know of at least a few other 550s to which this exact thing happened. Bit of a design flaw in an otherwise pretty solid car...

2nd place would probably go to the windshield, which had to be replaced due to gradual cracking. $2,559.82 not including labor ($350) or moldings ($300). Actually had to be replaced twice, but the second one was on the house since it started cracking within a day of me picking it up with the brand new windshield I paid for. I also cringe every time I hit a bug. And also when it gets cold out, which I think has something to do with it.

    F1 pump on a 360 -- $3000+.

Also quoted over $4k for a manifold, but a $50 weld ended up fixing that one. :)

You guys are getting ripped wide open for your parts......

I just bought this week an F1 pump for 360 for AUD$1700, (about $1000 US) new from Sydney Ferrari dealer, in stock, next day delivery. Fit it myself in 30 minutes. This is also a new spec upgraded part to the originals.

Although the 550 engine was cheap...... I was quoted over AUD$100,000 for one, which I ended up rebuilding for less than half that.

The 355 Crank at 4000 pounds!!!!!! (Maybe that was the fitted price??) I buy 360 ones at AUD$5000, about 2000 pounds, so I can't see how a 355 would be double that!!

I buy only genuine parts for almost all things too.

I'm reminded of our friend eric cartman...

"you guys are getting f'd in the 'A' "

Is that what FNA stands for?

I'm thinking the market is setting the price.

A 3,000 Euro part is a $2,000 part in the US.

$35 per spark plug was what sticks most in my mind, even if it was just a part of the nearly $10K bill for a major/belt service.

Sounds suspicious that you have self-cracking windshields. Is it from body flex? Seems to me there's an underlying cause that needs to be found.

The original one may have been started by something hitting the windshield - I really don't know for sure. The second one I chalk up to faulty installation. The third one has been on for ~8 mos. without incident, so I'm hopeful. I know from observation that wide temperature fluctuation contributes to propagation of an existing (even tiny) crack, but I don't know about what originally gets it started.

most inflated part/labor combo I've noticed so far...

    replace both front headlights
    parts 53.42 labor 157.50 total 210.92

3 months later one of the lights was out again, so I had it replaced when we all stopped in at an independent shop to pick up another friend's Ferrari.

same lightbulbs, $7 each. and it took about 1 minute all-in to pop out the old bulb and pop in the new. the independent wouldn't even let me pay the parts cost for the bulbs and gave me a couple extras along with a "have a nice day." I think they felt bad for me when I mentioned how much it cost the last time... :(

But I guess that's what you get for leaving it to your dealer to fix easy things without having a go at it yourself first...

Well, if that hadn't been covered by insurance, I might have been next to you on those railroad tracks. :)

As it is, the other things like windshields, other little stuff here and there, each of which seems to be a few thousand here and a few thousand there, makes me want to at least toss myself in front of a yellow cab on a bad day... Not to mention I had a hell of a time getting insurance coverage again after making Geico cough up the $60K for the engine job.

Curiously, though, I still consider my 550 to have been relatively trouble-free (you know, compared to Ferrari historical standards) and I really think it is true what they say about it being a pretty sturdy car compared to most.

I do drive the thing, ~35K miles in about 3.5 years, and other than things that I really do consider pretty freakish (like the engine) I have not had a lot of trouble with it. And she's so damned beautiful... :)
