I agree, some highways are great for these runs like the 15 out in the middle of nowhere. Just last week I took the 355 to Vegas, and hit about 180 with the top down. I think the tach was getting close to maxing out, but just barely glanced down. Still pulled good to that speed. Cruised at about 150 for several minutes at a time, what a short trip!
The car is very stable and one can definitely feel the underbody aero at work, and suprisingly the cabin turbulence wasn't any worse than at 80.

137 mph on Calif. Hwy 5 in my '68 XKE - top down! Scariest (and dumbest)thing I've ever done. The front end felt as if the car would lift off at any moment. My hair felt as though it was peeling away from my head. Hurts just to think of it.

Over the weekend I hit a top speed of close to 15 MPH going down a hill on my John Deere lawn tractor. The engine was at full goverened speed, I was pretty scarred at first, I noticed my hair was starting to blow a little and the steering was getting pretty light and less responsive.

I know you guys are going to think less of me, but I did have to slow it down to protect my ride, I had lawns to do!

It depends on several things. In a powerful car, you reach the speed quicker, and with good aerodynamics it feels stable.
IMO, it's scarier on slower cars because it takes so long to get up to higher speeds.

I talked to a fellow not too long ago, some of you may remember him from Ferrari of Los Gatos, Paul Cote. His part-time job used to be driving this collectors' vintage Ferrari collection to keep the 'blood moving' in them a couple times a month. He told me that he has had every one of those multi-million $ machines at their maximum speeds; his reasoning? because you are not doing much good for them when you don't warm that up to that level at times.

Absolutely, my '69 Firebird is terrifying at 90 mph but my modified STi hits 130 in the blink of an eye and is totally stable...

And knowing what 130 feels like, I can't imagine what 170-180 is. That's insane!

No high speed runs in the Ferrari...yet :)

170 in the 355 feels like 70 in the STi, but with more RPM's! :)

DO IT. Blow the carbon off the valves. If your car is right, it will be far more stable than anything at speed.

The 355 feels stable at high speed. Once you get it to 140-150 you get a feeeling of it "sitting" on the road. Then it's just a matter of time and open road to get to 170+.

I must admit the wind was pretty loud at that speed with the top down. I had the windows down earlier that day and only got to 165. Later I put the windows up and it made a difference.

Try it and I swear you will love it. This is the stuff grins are made up of!

Passenger with a picture of the speedo to prove it on the Kokahala highway in BC interior in 1984.

Anyone know how fast you get to drive while attending one of the racing schools in Vegas? Hope Q this is not considered a hyjack.
