Today I did a bit of work to clean up my throttle mechanism in the engine bay (1986 U.S. 328). The little roller on the throttle lever that drives the butterfly lever was frozen up, probably due to hardened grease inside it.

A quick spray with some throttle body cleaner got it spinning nicely again, but I assume it's not supposed to run dry, so I did my best to squeeze some Redline Hi-Temp Synthetic grease in between the roller and the shaft it runs on. Once I'd done that it spun ok with my finger, but with much more resistance that when dry, and in fact the roller was reluctant to turn when I assembled the mechanism again.

So, what do the pros use to lubricate this roller? Perhaps i should have used something like lithium grease instead. It's not clear to me if my roller has already developed a flat spot from when it was seized, but if it has it must be very minor since I can't see it with my naked eye.

I would use a drop of engine oil. Clean it again and and oil. Be sure there is no oil/grease on the outer surface of the roller or lever where they make contact. It is not a hard/fast rule by any means but for GENERAL lubrication, the old saying is pretty good - oil is used on rotating items, grease on sliding items.
